Sports rN Briefs h'Y Hugh f 1 ' rulUrton. Jr, - NEW YORK, March 23 The appointment of Tad Wie man, Princeton football coach, as civilian director of physical training for the army's special ized training program doesn't mean that the army has changed its attitude toward big-time foot ball . . . Just look at Princeton's record since the Fritz Crlsler era . . . Princeton won't hire a replacement for Tad until the prospects for next fall are clari fied, but there's still a pretty good candidate on hand in Harry Mahnken, whose 150-pound teams have been practically un beatable . . . And, speaking of coaches, don't be surprised if Dutch Clark, who found it quite a task to resign his Cleveland job, turns up as assistant to Gus Dorais of the Detroit Lions. ONE-MINUTE SPORTS PAGE If the National league doesn't okay Larry French's idea of pitching home games for the Dodgers while on weekend leave from his navy duties, he always can get a job with the Bush wicks, who employed Casey Stengel and other major leaguers under similar circumstances dur ing World war one . . . The semi pros figure Larry would be worth about $300 a game to them . . . Comedian Milton Berle had to go up to Bear Mountain to rehearse for Leo Durocher's appearance in his show tomor row, and the chances are Berle didn't get a word in sideways . . . Lieut. Jimmy Braddock, ex heavyweight champ, is doing his army chores on pier six which should be assurance that there won't be any pier six brawls around there. ; TODAY'S GUEST STAR Jack Charvat, Tulsa (Okla.) Tribune: "We will be following Texas league ball in the majors this year, and the season should be fairly interesting with so many well-known athletes from our circuit cavorting under the big top." HEADLINE HEADLINER Louisville Courier-Journal (re porting a slight case of high water at the White Sox French Lick, Ind., training camp): "Chi needs dikes instead of Dykes." ". SERVICE DEPT. Lieut. Ed Kingsley, Utah's top amateur golfer for several years, reports that "army life has reduced my ample waistline from 40 inches to 31." ... How about your handicap, Ed? Baseball Men Limber Up on Oregon Field EUGENE, Ore., March 23 W) University of Oregon baseball players began limbering up to day in preparation for inter- squad games scheduled by Coach Howard Hobson for this week. The Oregon team, with seven lcttermen returning, is conceded a good chance to repeat as north ern division champion. The infield of John Bubalo, first base; Don Kirsch, second base: Bob Farrow, shortstop, and Bill Hamel, third base, returns intact. Dick Burns and Bill White are letterman outfielders. The battery is the weak snot. Only Nick Begleries, diminutive pitcher, is 'jack. . Several good freshman prospects are working out, however, and Bubalo may be pressed into service as a pitch er. Bill McKevitt and Bill Pet erson, reserve catchers from last year, are on hand, as' well as Swede Carlson, a freshman who may get the starting post. The Webfoots'- first game will be against Linfield, March 30, Big Squad Answers Oregon's Spring Football Coll EUGENE, Ore., March 23 W) A sizable sauad of 82. boastlnc however, but a thin smattering oi leitermen, yesterday answer ed Coach John Warren's spring lootoaii call at the university of Oregon. Only nine lettermen were on hand, and Warren said condi tioning would be stressed in Monday, Wednesday and Friday drills for the remainder of the school year. PAGE SIX' March 23. 19.8 Henry too Tough for Tribuani Armstrong Gain Ten -Round Decision over Al Tribuani Before 12,633 PHILADELPHIA, March 23 (JP) Henry Armstrong proved last night he is the man of "1000 punches" in whipping tough Al Tribuani, of Wilmington, Del., before a howling crowd of 12.633 paid customers at Convention hall. Making his first eastern ap pearance on a comeback trail that now leads to New York's Madison Square garden, "Ham merin" Henry" threw close to 100 punches a round in gaming an unanimous 10-round decision over the game Tribuani. Although his flailing arms had the Wilmington youth on the verge of a knockout in the third, fifth and tenth, Armstrong, a 5 to 1 favorite, admitted after wards that it was a "tough fight" "I was fighting a superman be cause he's ambitious and a win over meNwould have put him right up there," Henry said. "It was tough." Armstrong, who will start training Thursday for his April 2 bout with Beau Jack in New York, said his eyes and hands were okay and that he thinks he may be able to get down to the lightweight limit of 135 pounds. As for going 15 rounds, he add ed, "I didn't feel good until the 10th round." Stanford Athletes Called to Service PALO ALTO, Calif., March 23 VP) The army has called 244 Stanford students in the enlisted reserves, including Jack Rey nolds of Pasadena, the univer sity's new student body presi dent, and 23 athletes to report for service on April 5. Emory Neale of Portland, Ore., nationally-known tennis player, was among the athletes receiving orders. Football play ers, who were summoned to duty included Ray Hammett, Randall Fawcett, Al Hoisch and Loren La Prade. 3fEW YORK Pvt. Tommy Yaross, 162. U. S. army, outpointed Van McNutt, BaltU mora (8). Husky Hoopmen Denied Draft Postponement SEATTLE, March 23 (P) Fur ther postponement of the date of his induction into the air force was denied Captain Wally Leaks of the University of Washington Huskies yesterday, and the big guard is definitely out of the picture in his team's contests in the western collegiate playoffs this weekend at Kansas City. An original extension had given Leask from March 29 to April 3, but this also has been cancelled, according to Dean Newhouse of Washington. Until last night It was hoped a further extension would per mit Leask to join the Huskies at Kansas City. Bill Taylor, a sophomore and star "trouble shooter," will replace him in the starting lineup. riOHTS By Tha Aaaoclatad Prill PHILADRLWIIA Henry Armitrong. 133'4, Los Angelei, outpointed Al Tribuani, 146i. Lucky Joe Cronin Has Good Prospects for Boston Sox By BILL KING MEDFORD, Mass., March 23 W) After masterminding bis Boston Red Sox into first divi sion berths for the last'five sea sons with some of the most er ratic pitching staffs in recent baseball history, Manager Joe Cronin appears destined to come up with a finely balanced set of chuckers this year. But, unfortunately, he can't see much of anything else to gloat about on his roster. When such seasoned pitchers as Tex Hughson, who had 22 wins against six losses in 1942, Joe Dobson, Ken Chase, Dick Newsome, Mace Brown and the most durable Mike Ryba check ed in yesterday at the Tufts col lege cage, and Oscar Judd indi cated he would be along shortly, Cronin admitted that his staff should boast of at least one more dependable pitcher than any oth er in the American league. "When I had Ted Williams, Dom Di Maggio, Lpu Finney and Johnny Pesky taking the best possible care of our hitting, I was crying for nine-inning pitch ers. Now that I appear to have the pitching I lacked, I haven't any sluggers," Cronin lamented. To replace such super-outfielders as the amazing Williams, the sensational Di Maggio and the dependable Finney would be al most a super-human task in nor mal times. Just now all Cronin knows about his outfield is that it must be built around the .262 hitting Pete Fox, the only fly catching holdover from 1942. The Red Sox have obtained the 40-year-old Al Simmons, a prodi gious slugger in his heyday, and such minor league prospects as Ford Garrison from Fort Worth, Tom McBride from Little Rock and Johnny Lazor from the Lou isville farm. Cubs Left High 'n Dry By Noviltoff Whit Sox Happy With First Outdoor Work On Dry Highland Tarrain FRENCH LICK, Ind., March 23 () The White Sox were happy today, holding their first outdoor practices on a nowly-dis-covercd patch of dry terrain in the highlands, and the Cubs also appeared high 1 and dry loft there by Lou "No-Deal" Novl koff. Jim Dykes, Sox manager, sent his charges onto an arid acre which adjoins an old circus barn, where wild beasts and monkeys once were wintered. The new site is calle.'. "Monkey Field" (with emphasis on the circus barn.) It's just the thing Dykes has been exploring for sinco Lost Creek found itself last week and flooded the regular Sox dia mond. Meanwhile, the Cubs were ca vorting on the 14th fairway of a golf course, and their followers were getting exercise by jump ing at conclusions. The general conclusion Is that Novikoff is a holdout. But that naughty word is only whispered, for General Manager Jim Galla gher is carrying on a campaign to make it obsolete for the dura tion of the war. He says in Chicago that the Mad Russian is an absentee, and merely pretends it is a game sending Novikoff contracts In California and watching for the return mail to see if they boom erang unsigned.
