Phona 9144 '' mcsb aaa mi i m m Ross Comes Home to His Own Crowd Marin Corporal Lets Down Hoir to Enjoy Sports Writers Shindig By SID FEDER NEW YORK, March 16 (P) Corp. Barney Ross came home last night to his own "mob," the fight writers. After weeks of public appear ices, speech-making and gener al merry-go-round riding in his best bib and tucker, he sat down with his old pals at small pri vate party the boxing writers gave him just the kind of "shindig I wanted, where I could take my hair down and cut up touches with the fellows know." And in the simple, easy way that made him the "sports writ ers' fighter," the-one-time world welterweight and lightweight champion admitted to the boys that he shouldn't have been sing led out for a hero's role from the marine action on Guadalcanal. There was some argument about this. The writers pointed out. that he had killed 22 Japs one night last November while standing by and protecting three wounded marine buddies. "Yes," he explained, "but I feel so insignificant, because I'm only one of the many thousands who have done as much in fact, most of them have done a whole lot more than I have. But I was lucky. And I'll never forget that the Lord had his arms around my neck and kept them there all the time I was in action. "People make heroes," he went on. "Don't forget one thing every man who's able to hold and fire a rifle is a hero. There are no cowards out there. Sure, we all had that knocking of the knees and the clacking of the teeth. But the only thing all of us thought xbout and cared about was to see how many Japs we could shoot every day we were in the line." The only formality about the party was a presentation to Ross by Publisher Nat Fleischer, of the Ring magazine merit award for 1942. This, along with the Edward J. Neil Memorial trophy the. Boxing Writers association presented, him. previously, - just about clinched the little corpor al's rating as "boxing man of the year." ' Northwest Hoop Teams Ready to Go Portland Boilermaker to Meet New Orleans Club, at Fort lewis Meet Montana DENVER, March 15 (ff) There's a question in the air about the eligibility of one play er' in the National A.A.U. bas ketball tournament. But there's no question whatever about the shooting ability of another. A rumor that Sgt. Julius Riv lin, captain of the Fort Warren, Wyo., All Stars, had played pro fessional basketball in Akron, Ohio, reached AAU officials as the service team was crushing Denver capitol life 83-36 in a first round battle on the tour ney's opening program last night. At the same time, little Cor poral Ben Schall of the Fort War ren, team was piling up a total of 41 points, seven short of the tourna-ient individual scoring record of 48 set by Larry To- buren of Denver university three years ago. ' In other' first round games yesterday, the Poudre Valley Creamery of Fort Collins, Colo., defeated the Colorado Springs, Colo., army alrbase 82-36, and the Colorado Springs, Colo, Mar tin Jewelers knocked out the Greeley, Colo., Lions club 47-38, and the Butte, Mont., Boosters beat the Colorado Springs YMCA, 47-38. Dow Chemical of Midland, Mich., beat Denver' American Beauty 39-33 in the second round contest to complete yesterday's program of five' games, a light schedule compared with the 12 game opening days of past tour neys. The northwest's two entries will see their first action today and Tuesday, with the Portland Boilermakers meeting St, Aloy sius club of New Orleans at 2:30 p. m. today, and the Fort Lewis Reception center playing- the Butte, Mont., Boosters at 2 p. m.
