Well, fellas, tho local dog fight
ended, at least temporarily, with
the dogs winning.
You remomber last week the
city council had before It an ordi
nance to require that dogs bo tied
up or penned up for six months
out of the year. , , A big crowd
protested Monday night, and the
council decided to take It easy
on dogs . , If dogs do not cause
too much trouble for the next
month or so, they will not be
penned up at all.
At this writing, ' the Pelican
basketball team is in the finals
at Salem In the state tourna
ment, with Baker the other fi
nalist team , . . We'll let you
know next week how this comes
out.
Women are doing a lot of work
around Klamath Falls that was
done by men when you were
here . , . . There arc women taxi
drivers, women railroad work
ers, women service station at
tendants, etc. . . . Now, the post
office has started hiring women

Juvenile delinquency is a war
time problem here at home . . .
A number of 12, 13 and 14-year-old
girls have been running to

vice president of the local teach
ers association. The new WAAC
is a graduate of Ashland high
school and has attended South
ern Oregon College of Education
and the University of Oregon.

has been graduated from the of
ficer candidate course at' the
quartermaster school here and
has been commissioned a second
lieutenant in the army of the
United States.
The quartermaster school
graduates more than 1200 officer
candidates a month after a three
months' intensive 23 subject
course in basic military and
quartermaster technical opera
tions. Candidates for the school
are picked by boards throughout
the army and their selection is
based upon their initiative, mili
tary aptitude, intelligence, prior
civilian experience and their rec
ord to date in the army.

son of Wade H. Clemens, 4622

pre-flight training at Santa Ana
air base, and has been ordered
to an advanced, flying. school for
instruction as bombardier-navigator.
Albert O'Neef of Alaskan
Engineering Fame, Dies
PORTLAND, Ore., March 13
W'j Albert C. O'Neel, 78,
whose engineering exploits led
to storybook fame, died here
yesterday.
One of tho men who bested
Alaska's weather and rugged
terrain to open the northern
country to civilization, O'Neel
inspired Rex Beach's novel,
"The Iron Trail," In which a re
sourceful engineer, Murray
O'Nell, was the leading char
actcr, Dr. George Whiting also drew
on O'Necl's career for "Grit,
Grief and Gold."
His most famed feat was con
struction 35 years ago of the
Copper River St Northwestern
railway through 198 miles of
mountainous Alaska In which
he accomplished what other an

OBITUARY
GEORGE CARTER
George Carter, a resident of
Klamath Falls for the last three
months, passed away in this city
on Friday, March 12, 1943, fol
lowing a brief illness. The de
ceased was a native of Athens,
Texas, and was aged 49 years
when called. Surviving is a sis
ter, Mrs. J. M. Gilmore; five
nephews, Robert,. Carl, Cecil,
Clarence and Lawrence Gil
more; two nieces, Myrtle, and
Edith Gilmore, all residing at
Chehalis, Wash. The remains
rest at Ward's Klamath funeral
home where friends may call
Sunday afternoon. Funeral ar
rangements will be announced
