SALEM, March 8 (JP) Two
bills which will help Oregon's
old age pension .recipients at
tain their goal of $38 monthly
average pensions have been
signed into law by Governor
Earl Snell. The present average
is $25. .
' One bill taxes pinball games
?50 a year , and coin-operated
phonographs $10 to produce
$1,000,000 a year for pensions.
With federal funds, this will
make $2,000,000 a year avail
able for pensions.
The other bill will give liquor
sales a monopoly on the sale of
fortified wines, or those con
taining more than 14 per cent
alcohol. These wines now are
sold in wine, grocery and drug
stores. '
The wine bill will be effective
next January 1, and will give
the liquor stores more profits
and thus more pension money.

Brings Education to U.S. 1
Service Men at Outposts
SEATTLE, March 8 (IP) You
won't find them in uny directory
of educational institutions, but
the College of the Aleutians and
Kodiak university rank as the
two newest American institu

There's no campus romance
and the classrooms run strictly
to the messhall school of archi

far-reaching innovation in edu

military outposts.
Capt. M. L. Witherspoon, na
val recreation and morale offi
cer of the Alaska sector, told of
the "newest thing In the navy"
on a visit here today.
"We expect it to produce won
derful results," said the veteran
of a quarter century's service in
the corps of chaplains.
"Courses will be offered In
any high school or college sub
ject that three or more students
elect to take. We have the books
required for a wide field of sub
jects. "Classes will be held evenings
in messhalls, barracks and spe
cial huts.
"There aren't any girls
around, and I'm sure the boys
will study harder than they
would in any other environ
ment." Captain Witherspoon said the
program is a forerunner
to a world-wide correspondence
school system which the army
and navy, in conjunction with
universities and colleges, are
contemplating.
