DISASTER PAYMENTS
SALEM, Feb. 22 W) The
Marlon county chapter of the
American Red Cross is making
final payments to persons who
suffered losses In last month's
Willamette valley flood. The
chapter already has paid out
$2361 to buy food and other
materials.
MINESWEEPER
FOUNDERS OFF
MARSHFIELD. Ore.. Feb. 22
UP) A navy minesweeper cap
sized in heavy seas off Coos
bay Saturday with a loss of five
dead and eight missing, the thir
teenth naval district announced
today. '
Only 16 of 29 aboard reached
shore alive. Twenty-one were
picked out of the tossing Pacific
by a coast guard surf boat and a
fishing craft, but seas were run
ning so high they weer unable
to land for 24 hours. Five of the
rescued, injured in the capsizing
and suffering from exposure in
the open coast guard boat, died
during the night.
Names Withheld
The minesweeper's com
mander, Lt. Carl F. Leltz of
Longview, Wash., was among
the survivors. Names of the
dead and missing were with
held, the navy said, pending
notification to their next of kin.
The minesweeper was return
ing from patrol off the Oregon
coast to its base at Coos bay
at 4:45 p. m. Witnesses from
shore said it wallowed through
mountainous waves to within a
quarter-mile of the harbor en
trance. There a huge comber
caught the ship and flipped it
over.
Planes Aid
The fishing boat, The Five
Brothers, was in the vicinity
and it headed for the mine
sweeper. Huge breakers stopped
all other crift except the coast
guard boat from putting out to
the rescue.
Navy planes from the Coos
bay section base took off at
once. They patrolled the area,
searching for survivors, and
that night dropped medical sup
plies to the rescue craft by para
chute. Valley Flood
Damage Estimated '.

EUGENE, Feb. 22 UP) The
Willamette valley s- 1942 year-
end flood did damage estimated
at more than $8,000,000, the U,
S. . army engineers revealed to
day in a partial report on the
worst inundation here since
1927. . ... :

house-to-house and farm-to-farm
survey now under way is com
pleted, the engineers said..
The report also stated that the
Cottage Grove and Fern Ridge
flood control dams ; "proved
their worth during the flood.

George L. Maynard, 46-year-old
retired marine corps major, Sat
urday was absolved ot the death
of John Kenneth Henninger, 27,
Coquille grocer, in a scuffle here
December 19.
The Coos county grand jury
retired a not true bill in the case.
Maynard had been at libery un
der $3000 bail.
The grand Jury indicted Del-
bert F. Brown, North Bend, on
a charge of assault with a dang
erous weapon against Alfred M.
Peterson, 19, son of County Com
missioner Lars Peterson. Brown
was accused ot attacking Peter
son with a knife during a visit
with Brown's step-daughter.
National Defense

Federal Judge
SEATTLE, Feb. 22 (IP) In this
all-out war, for which "history
gives us no precedent," much
litigation must be decided "in
the interest of national defense,"
Federal Judge Lloyd L. Black
has observed in a significant oral
opinion upholding office of price
administration rent regulations,
it was disclosed today.
By his action of granting a
temporary Injunction to prevent
James T. and Clara -Wilson,
Bremerton landlords, from evict
ing their tenants, William, and
Bessie Plonsik, he overruled
Superior Judge H. G. Sutton of
Kitsap county, who held for the
landlords on the eviction, despite
OPA testimony of rent regula
tion violation.

Laduke Lumber
Rebuilding Begun

Reconstruction was under way
today on the Laduke Lumber
company mill at Cushman,
damaged by a $30,000 fire last
month.
The company said capacity

daily and operations probably
will be resumed about July 1.
