HIGHER PRICE!
WASHINGTON, Jan. 29, m
The government yesterday guar
anteed farmers higher prices
this year for tomato, pea, sweet
corn ' and snap bean canning
crops, but promised that con
sumer prices of the canned pro
ducts would be held at approxi
mately, present levels. -
Under a program designed to
encourage greater production of
these crops, the agriculture de
partment' announced it would
buy these canned vegetables
from' canners at prices which
would enable them to pay farm
ers specified, minimum . prices.
These minimum prices wU! be
higher than were paid last year,
it said.
The department plans to sell
the- canned gooda back to can
ner at a discount and at prices
which would permit their distri
bution under retail ceiling prices
little if any higher than now pre
vail.: The ; difference, . which .
would in effect be a subsidy, will .
be borne by the department.
Officials said canned tomatoes,
peas, sweet corn and snap beans
would be major commodities on 1
the list of canned gooda to be
rationed later.
