Two Croups Opposing
According to the legisla
tive committee of the state as

tax money should be returned
to school districts to reduce tne
property tax. (The bill provides
all Income tax receipts above
$7,730,000 be distributed to
school districts.)
Wyatt JPaogett of the legisla
tive committee stated that at

be made by two groups: those
who wish to get the funds for
some other purpose, and those
who want to reduce the income
tax.
In view of Governor Snell's
opposition to reduction of the
income tax at this time, Padgett
expressed the opinion that the
greatest threat to the bill lies
with those who want to get the
money for some other purpose.

It was stressed that only three
articles are wanted and that
these are to be turned in at the
respective home rooms where
members of the club will pick
them up. This is to be a com
petitive drive between the home
rooms.
This semester sees home nurs
ing being reinstalled. Mrs. Mar
garet Strode is instructing these
classes, which consist of Junior
girls who are interested in the
subject. Last semester it could
not be arranged in the schedule.
Last year a forest conservation
class was held which resulted in
the employment of a number of
boys. Thursday classes will start
again with Don Norland In
charge of the program. Ranger
John Sarginson of Rogue River
national forest and Ranger Don
Fisher of Lava Beds National
monument, will help Instruct the
boys. This program is not only
on fire control but there are also
patrol and crews who watch for
any trouble on the trails, tele
phones and roads. The boys are

Ephraton Dies as
Gasoline Explodes
ZPHRATA, Jan. 19 UP)
Henry Gutschmldt, 44, died last
night of burns received when a
five-gallon can exploded,
drenching him with flaming
gasoline. Gutschmldt was using
a blowtorch to thaw frozen
water pipes when the nearby
gasoline container blew up.

these men receive their honor
able discharges and enroll In
the American Legion. The
Legion is a veterans' organiza
tion open only to those who have
completed their war service, and

of the Legion to give eligibility
to tne auxiliary to the women of
his family.

GRANTS PASS. Jan. 19 UP)
A Jersey heifer In the herd of
Frank Schutzwohl, local dairy
man, led the nation in the Oc
tober register of merit test roll
of honor compiled by American
Jersey Cattle club. She pro
duced 1802 pounds of milk and
101.11 pounds of butterfot for
the month.. She was milked
twice dally only.
southern Oregon had nine of
the 43 cows listed on the roll.
Six are from the Schutzwohl
herd and three from the herd of
E. B. Poyer, Ashland.

State Guard Seen as
Backlog of Coast Defense

In a major offensive in war,
careful planning is an absolute
necessity. Not one point may be
overlooked for fear it might
prove to be the offensive's
stumbling block. By the same
reasoning, in planning a defense,
every possibility and every
likelihood must be given consid
eration to prevent Insofar as pes-;
sible the enemy breaking
through a weak point.
And Just what does talk of of
fensives and defenses have to do
with this area? Frankly, we
don't know, sine our city and
county have two mountain I
ranges and many miles between
them and the coast.
However, her art few
thoughts we might all ponder
carefully. Klamath Falls is the
largest city in a space of 3 to 400
miles on the fastest railroad and
highway routes running north
and south. We are less than
one-half an hour from the sea by
fast plane and have a good air
port, situated out of the fog belt
where landings could be made
at almost any time.
The organizing of state guard
battalions throughout the nation
Is an endeavor which could well
prevent the overlooking of that
on detail, that one weak point,
which means our safety. Never
intended as combat units, the
Oregon state guards could well
fight a delaying action, or keep
a small force of enemy para
troops busy pending arrival of
regular troops. In an emergen
cy, three or four hundred train
ed and disciplined state guards
could patrol and guard many
miles of vital supply routes.
That Is our purpose and that Is
why wa need still greater enlist
ments In tha Oregon state guards.
It Is Impossible for this commun
ity to feel It has done Its part if
it hasn't provided sufficient men
to fill the local companies to full
strength and It is impossible for
tha local companies to properly
plan action for an emergency
without lots of manpower.

There's no need of too much worry
about making your meat allowance
stretch when there are all those deli
cious bonus meats that can be had
(at least at this writing). I speak of
sundry meats such as liver, heart,
kidney, pigs' feet and all those extras
that don't come in on the meat quota.
As far as nutritional value goes, they
have everything that other meats
have, and in most cases, more too.
Liver, heart, and kidney are right on
top of the list when it comes to con
tributing iron to the diet. They're
vitamin foods, too, for they contain
vitamins A, B, C, and some D.
If you've built up a psychological
resistance toward them, it is most
likely because you've probably never
tried them. But if you like chicken
giblets, then you're bound to like
these bonus meats.
MOCK GIBLET NOODLES Saute
small pieces of liver or kidney or pre
cooked heart in hot shortening. Make
a sauce out of the pan drippings or
use mushroom sauce and add meat
and sauce to hot noodles. Don't pass
judgment on sundries until you'va
tried this dish,.
SPANISH KIDNEY Remove white
centers: and tubes of kidneys, slice
into thin slices, brown quickly in hot
shortening along with chopped onion.
Cover with tomato sauce or canned
tomatoes and steam for about 15 min
utes. Serve with rice or spaghetti.
LIVER BURGERS Grind uncooked
liver, using the coarse knife of the'
grinder, add about Yi as much bread
crumb?, chopped onions and season
ings to taste. Add enough beaten egg
or evaporated milk to bind mixture.,
Shape into patties and fry quickly.

Sauerkraut adds variety
Sauerkraut and pork, like ham and eggs, have
long been associated. Funny how foods be
come linked with one another and are never
given a break along other lines. Sauerkraut,
for instance, has that same smacking good
ness when used with other meats, or as a veg
etable combination or in salads. Just to prove
our point, we'll pass along a few of our own -ideas
that have come in for their share of
praise.
SAUERKRAUT WITH LIVER DUMP.
LINGS Like, something downright deli
cious in an .old fashioned way? Then add
chopped precooked liver to dumpling dough
and drop on boiling sauerkraut. Cover tightly
and steam 12 minutes without peeking. Serve -immediately.

cause the family'll be asking for seconds.
LIMA BEAN-SAUERKRAUT CASSE.
ROLE Combine about t cups cooked lima
beans, 1 cup of bread crumbs, 1 cup of sauer- -kraut
in a greased casserole. Season to taste.
Bake in s.moderate oven (350F.) for about
1 hour.
MOLDED SAUERKRAUT SALAD,
When making molded vegetable salads, add
a helping of drained sauerkraut. The zest
and chewiness will win high favor. Shredded
carrots and sauerkraut is a special favorite.
