POLICY
THE Petroleum Administration for
War has deemed it "necessary for the
prosecution of the war" that gasoline credit
cards be eliminated. The objective is to save
manpower, business machines, and con
gestion in mails and banking. This objec
tive was made clear to the oil companies
through wording of the Government's order
and by consultation with representatives of
the Petroleum Administration for War.
However, certain provisions of the order
make it possible to continue to issue credit
at single stations only. The facts are, how
ever, that segregation and handling of this
type of credit actually requires more time
and manpower than general credit and does
not conserve business machines, nor relieve
mail or banking congestion.
For these reasons we feel that single'
station credit is against the spirit of the
Government's order, and would thwart the
true objectives of the order. Single station
credit can in no way help the war effort
The Union Oil Company is adhering fully;
to the Government's 6rder, and is not honor-:
ing credit cards, except for Government
vehicles and essential commercial users.
Union Oil Company is deeply appreciative
of your cooperation. We hope to resume use
of credit cards when this war is won. But we
know, as you do, that today the only im-i
portant thing is winning it Until then we
will do our best to help keep your car roll;
