CAPTURED HERE
BEGINS- TERM
SALEM, ec. 2 IJP) Eugene
Foster, Salt Lake City, entered
the state penitentiary yesterday
to begin a three-year sentence
on a child-stealing charge.
Foster, who formerly lived In
Klamath Falls, pleaded guilty in
Bend Monday and was sentenced
at once by Circuit Judge Ralph
S. Hamilton.
Foster admitted abducting
two-year-old Sharon Telford in
Bend. With Mrs. Telford, ho was
arrested In northern California,
after state police had punctured
his tires with bullets.
Mrs. Foster, the mother of the
child by a former marriage, was
placed on probation for five
years.
Foster was arrectnH nn ,
child stealing charge in the Tule-
mxe aisinci a lew weeks ago
after a wild flight from a state
policeman who undertook to ar
rest him here on a "equcst from
Bond authorities.
. Stormed nt tho
shops on Summers lane, he
jumped into his car and fled
over back roads to T u 1 e 1 a k,e
even though the officer blew off
one rear tire of his car with a
shotgun blast. Foster abandoned
the car on the state line road
and started to hike to Tulana
farms, where his wife and the
child -ere w..:ting for him.
Klamath and Siskiyou officers
caught up with him there and
placed him under cjrest, return
ing him to Bend.
40 ESCAPE INJURY
AS LAUNCH BUS
BREMERTON. Dec. 2 UPl
Forty men riding in a 30-foot
launch being used as a ferry
for navy yard workers to Port
Orchard miraculously escaped
serious injury last night when
the launch exploded and burned.
All 40 of the passengers were
thrown on jumped into the
water but only three were in
jured. Albert Lieseke, 18-year-
old launch operator, was worst
burned, but even his hurts were
reported as not critical.
Nearby boats and navy tugs
rescued what passengers did not
swim ashore.
William Burnett, assistant
navy yard police chief and pas
senger on a nearby boat, said
the explosion simply lifted and
Shattered the craft's superstruc
ture as flames spread over the
hull.

SAN DIEGO, W San Diego's
citizens would be happy to con
form to federal suggestions.
The civilian defense council
received 50,000 federal leaflets
collect, at $24 advising all
over 12 years old to use only 21
pounds of meat a week.
The council wants to know
where to get the other pound

DECLINE IN
TAX SELLING
By VICTOR EUBANK
NEW YORK. Dec, 2 UP) A
fuither decline In tax selling
worked in the stock market's fa
vor today and on some broaden
ing of demand in the late pro
ceedings many leaders pushed
ahead fractions to around a
point.
A number of the so-called
peace shares were prominent in
the rally but other issues in this
category were backward, while
heavy industry stocks which
have had big war profits did
fairly well.
The day s transfers totaled
about 500,000 shares.
International Harvester and
Oliver Farm each rose a point
or so to new highs for the year,
Deere was fractionally ahead.
Other gainers of a point or more
at the best included Westing
house, Union Carbide, Eastman
Kodak and U. S. Gypsum.
Moderately on the plus side
were U. S. Ste 1, Bethlehem, Re
public, General Motors,. Chrys
ler, Goodrich, U. S. Rubber, Ana-
conda, American Can, Allied
Chemical and Johns Manvllle.
Rails and utilities showed
minor changes with Santa Fe
doing a little better than other
carriers.
Coca-Cola and Douglas Air
craft failed to generate much re
covery power after early, de
clines of a point. U. S. Rubber
preferred slid off around 2. Sears
Roebuck and Montgomery Ward
were a bit lower most of the ses
sion.
Bonds met improved support
near the finish.

WPB's Controlled
Materials Plan
To Be Explained
PORTLAND, Dec. 2 VP) The
war production board's new
controlled materials plan, which
eventually will replace all pri
orities regulations, will be dis
cussed in a district meeting here
December 8.
J. Fred Bergesch, district WPB
manager, said three Washing
ton, D. C. specialists will ex
plain the plan, which at present
affects all users of copper, alum
inum or steel but ultimately will
cover all critical materials.
Manufacturers from Oregon
and southwestern Washington
are expected to attend.
TASTY DISH
ANNISTON, Ala., UP) After
all, there IS something new un
der the sun.
The patrol of a local barbecue
stand ordered sweet milk and
crackers. He mixed them in a
bowl, and ' seasoned with salt
and pepper. Then he chipped an
apple into the bowl. Finally he
took a bottle of whiskey from
his pocked and poured in a lib
eral portion.
Then he disposed of it all with
a spoon.
The authorities ought to work
out a plan for seeing that the
men with no visible means of
support, and those whose visible
means is shady, are steered into
war employment. B. C Seiple,
manager Cleveland U. S. E. S.

CHICAGO, Dee. 2 UP) Con.
tlnulng their recent broad ad

to almost 2 cents bushel, with
rye futures again in the lead.
Wheat, corn and rye quota.
tions were around top levels for
the past two months in some
cases. Cash corn was the highest

Buying came from -mills, in
dustrial users of corn and deal,
ers covering previous short sales
in the rye pit. Record farm and
industrial consumption of corn
and belief that war develop
ments may lead to revived ex
port traffic in domestic grains
stimulated buying. Colder weath
er also was a factor while some
dealers thought the flour ceiling
might be revised upward.
Wheat closed 1-11 cents high.
er than yesterday, Dec. $1.26i,
May $1,311-1; corn 1-1 higher,
