(P) Thousands ol spectators,
including hundreds of visitors
from Astoria, Ore., attended the
launching here nine years ago
Df the cruiser Astoria, one of
three United States cruisers lost
In a Solomon islands battle. The
D950-ton vessel was named for
the Oregon city.
The Astoria was the United
Btates warship which was chosen
in March, 1939, to carry the
' ashes of Japanese Ambassador
Hiroso Saito back to his home
land, as a gesture of American
good will.
Miss Leila C. McKay, a de
scendant of the founders of As
toria, was the sponsor at the
launching ceremonies.
The vessel's keel was laid on
September 1, 1930, and it was
commissioned April 28, 1934. It
normally carried a crew of 49
officers and 850 enlisted men.
The Astoria cost $11,951,000.
Chances of accidental death
from the moment of birth have
been estimated at 16 to 1.

Justice Dies
SEATTLE, Oct. 13 OP) Jus
tice John F. Main of the Wash
ington state supreme court died
in a hospital here' at 8 a. m.
today. He had been critically
ill several weeks and recently
announced his withdrawal from
the November election contest.
Judge Main, 78, became ill
before the September primary
and, although unable to cam
paign, received the highest vote
of four candidates for his su
preme court position. After the
primary, however, he with
drew.

battleship Oregon may be held
on Pearl Harbor day.
The Dec. 7 date is only under
tentative consideration, but
Marshall N. Dana, chairman of
the battleship Oregon commis
sion, said ho hoped navy recruit
ing and bond selling campaigns
could be tied In on that day with
the send-off for the Spanish
American war dreadnaught, to
be broken up far scrap metal.
To further the bond campaign,

gested that the woodwork of the

Navy officials are expected to
