ORDER EXPECTED
WASHINGTON, Oct. 8 VP)
Discontinuance of gold mining
was expected to be ordered by
the war production board to di
vert the miners and some equip
ment to the non-ferrous mines
producing more urgently needed
metals for tho war effort.
A WI'B spokesman, declining
to be quoted by name, said the
board had decided to take ac
tion, soon terminating gold pro
ductlon.jprobably In a month or
two. Skeleton crews will be
permlttod to stand by, he added,
to prevent flooding or other
damage to the mines.
Senator Johnson (D-Colo.) said
ha and other western senators
had opposed the move but was
told that while the decision was
made "reluctantly," action was
necessary to relieve a critical
labor situation In the non-fer-rou
smetal mines.
In Colorado, Governor Ralph
L. Carr declared "Our peoplo
will do anything to support and
equip our men in a(l theatres of
war but urged government re-
payment In part for "the losses
they will experience and for

convention of the International
Woodworkers of America (CIO),
before the session was closed for
executive discussions of a finance
resolution.
The resolution for a special
assessment to pay off old debts
of the international was called
from committee by floor motion
as Ash finished speaking.

1 peck green tomatoes
1 quart sliced apples

1 pound seedless raisins, salt
1 pound suet, chopped, cln

2 quarts small green tomatoes
12 small cucumbers
3 red peppers
1 cauliflower
2 bunches celery
1 pint small onions
2 quarts string beans
i pound mustard seed
2-oz. turmeric
1-oz. allspice
1-oz. pepper
i-oz. clove, salt
1 gallon vinegar
Prepare vegetables and cut In
small pieces, cover with salt, let
stand 24 hours and drain. Heat
vinegar and spices to boiling
point, add vegetables, and cook
until soft.

gates seriously, "he knows the
value of wood. He besides his
