BAKER GETS 10 YEARS
Orval baker was sentenced to
10 yenrs in prison in circuit
court Thursday when ho pleaded
guilty to a charge of knowingly
uttering nnd publishing a forged
bank check. Baker was arrested
recently for Klamath authorities
at Vancouver, Wash. Ho had a
previous criminal record.

Tomatoes are without question the most
versatile of all foods. They have a place at
every meal tomato juice, soup, salad,
sandwiches, sauces, relishes and they are
equally good cooked or uncooked.
Tomato connoisseurs say the best, way
to enjoy them is to first scald them, then
chill, peel, slice, and salt them. But there
are nianv other ways. too.
, Tomatoes aro wonderful for adding
sparkle to other foods meats, macaroni
and spaghetti dishes, and vegetable cas
seroles. You'll find that round steak, pork or
veal chops and stinks, shoulder lunib chops,
and similar cuts of meat aro more lender
and flavorful when braised in tomato juice
or tomato soap iusUnd of water.
Another thingtomatoes notoajy taste
good, they're also rich in Vitamins A and C.
Vitamin C, often so elusive, is piotected by
the natural tomato acid, so that you can
raid, cook, and can tomatoes without sac
rificing much of the vitamin.
This Is tho season when tomatoes are
ripe and juicy In most parts of the country,
and it's a good time to put up tomato juice.
The juice is almost as versatile as tomatoes
themselves. Serve it hot or cold, as is or
highly seasoned, or combinrd with other
liquids. For peppy flavor, add lemon juice
and Worcestershire sauce. For difTcrent
tasting cocktails, combine tomato juice
with equal amounts of chilled pineapple,
grapefruit, or sauerkraut juice, or with hot
or chilled clam juice, consomme, or bouillon.
Or make tomato juice into aspic,

10 lbs. tomatoes taps, salt
Wash and core but do not peel tomatoes.
Cut in eighths. Place in large 8-at. kettle; 4
odd x cups water; cover; ooii ju miuuies.
Put through sieve to removo seeds. Add
oalt and heat to boiling. Pour into hot
sterilised jars or bottles; seal; and pasteur
ize (direction follow). Makes about 7 pis.
Bottling and Pasteurization! Do not
use lids with sine 'tops. Wash jais thor
oughly; sterilise by placing in boiling water
for 10 minutes. Heat juice to 174 -F. to
180 F. Pour into hot jars, filling just to
1H inches from Uie top to allow room for.
expansion. Seal at once, according to type
of lid. Place hot jars in water which has
been heated to 100 F. to 185 F. Stand
jars upright on rack; have completely cov
ered with water. Heat water to 17i F. to
184" F. and hold temperature SO minutes.
Do not heat higher than 18i F. Remove
immediately from hot water. Test seals for
tightness. Let cool undisturbed in place
free from draft Then wipe off and store.
