FOR HOUSING FIRE

A Puget Sound navy yard em
ploye was . taken Into custody
early today for investigation in
to a $100,000 fire which destroy
ed five units of a new federal
dormitory project last . night,
leaving 207 men homeless . in
this overcrowded city.
He was arrested, Police Chief
Arthur Morken said, after an
attempt had been made to start
a fire in a dormitory unit across
the road from those destroyed.
The only known casualty of
the blaze, elderly Gust Erickson,
who resided in a shack near the
area, was recovering in a hos
pital from burns on the face,
hands and body. Erickson,
asleep when the fire reached his
shack, was burned while escap
ing. Taken to a hospital for
treatment, he returned and rush
ed into the burning cabin to
rescue a trunk containing his
life savings. He collapsed when
he brought it outside and was
returned to the hospital.
Police Chief Morken said that
three hours after the first fire
broke out a fire was discovered
in a lavatory of a dormitory unit,
70 feet away and across the road
from the destroyed structures,
It was discovered before it had
an opportunity of spreading.
Morken said that paper towels
in a waste paper basket had
been ignited and paper towels
in a holder on the wall had also
been set afire.
The dormitories were operated
by the farm security administra
tion, and were known as "Dura
tion Dormitories." being lightly
constructed with the thought
they would be raxed after the

killed late yesterday in the
flaming crash in separate acci
dents of two training planes from
Minter field.
.The dead were announced by
Lt. James A. Lewis, Minter Held

Averill was flying one plane
solo. Lt. Srnth and Jones were
in the other. Lt. Lewis said
no cause had been ascertained
for either crash, which occurred
within half an hour of each
other.

Boeing Official Says Tax
Bill Would End Company

H. E. Bowman, of Seattle, told
the senate finance committee to
day In a faltering voice that the
pending revenue bill "probably
would end the existence" of the
Boeing Aircraft corporation,
which manufactures "Flying
Fortresses" and other military
aircraft.
. Asserting that the Boeing com
pany, of which he is treasurer,
would have to turn over 88.75
per cent of Its net profits in taxes
if the bill becomes law, Bow
man said:
"I am here to plead with you
for the lite of this company be-
causo In our opinion this tax
bill, If passed In its present form,
will probably end Its existence.
I say this with all snrlnusness."
Bowman testified he had been
urged by members of the suimtn

the revenue measure. Ho said
