The war labor board has refused
to grant a general wage Increase
to 1200 Remington Rand com
pany employes In New York's
Tonawanda and North Tona
wanda plants because. It decid
ed, two recent pay raises they re
ceived more than compensated
for higher living costs since Jan.
1, 1941.
Applying its wage stabilization
formula for the first time since
it was set forth in the Little
Steel case, the board rejected
the CIO United Electrical, Radio
and Machine Workers' demands
for a 10-ccnts an hour raise but
approved a 2 J cent increase for
women employes hired on an in
centive basis.
The added amount brought
the women employes' hourly pay
to 50 cents reducing inequalities,
the board said, between their
wages and those of the men.
Citing the formula based on a
general rule that workers need
15 per cent more money than
they were receiving Jan. 1, 1941,
to offset higher living costs, the
board declared that their pay
raises totaling 18 cents an. hour
for men and 11 cents for women
more than met the scale.
Workability
. Dean Wayne L. Morse, public
member of the board, suggested
that the decision demonstrated
the Vworkability" of the stabi
lization formula which in the
Little Steel case gave more than
150,000 workers a 44-cents-a-day
raise instead of the dollar their
union asked.

decision "virtually means wage
freezing," and added he did not
think it a fair one." He dis
puted the board's formula of a
15 per cent increase to compen
sate for higher living costs, say
ing union surveys show costs in
. the Buffalo area have gone up
25 per cent.

The Klamath Falls navy re
cruiting station hit the jackpot
Tuesday when 13 men, the larg
est number ever to enlist from
here in one day, were sworn in
at Portland. Moreover, not one
of the 11 men who were sent
north for their physical exam
inations Monday night failed to
pass, according to F.. R. . Dun
can, recruiting officer. -
Among those enlisting were
identical twins, Lester Don Hun
saker and Robert Dale Hun

America's Air-Borne Commandos
Bridge Urges Girls
To Register for
Summer Camp
Girls who have been disap
pointed in their summer plans
by cancellation of Girl Scout
Camp "Esther Applegate," are
urged by Dave Bridge, city rec
reation officer, to register for
the girls' camp at Lake o' the
Woods from August 16-23. It
is sponsored by the city police
department and recreation com
mittee and there is plenty of
room for more grade school
campers from 8 years of age on
up, he said. '. "
A charge of 10-20 cents a day
for each child is made for this
camp, depending upon the num
ber of children attending. In
addition, each camper is asked
to bring her own food, a list of
which may be obtained at the
recreation office in the city
hall, where further information
may be obtained and registra
tion made.
Sproat to Head
Aviation Group
Robert Sproat, Jr., is the new
chairman of the aviation com
mittee of the Klamath county
chamber of commerce. He suc
ceeds Lawrence Slater, who has
joined the air corps.
Sproat has been active in avia
tion affairs here for several
years and holds a private flier's
license.
