pair with Dorris third-place
leading Craters twice blacked out
Victors Saturday night, 14-8, on the 12-hit hurling of Virg
Haynes and the eight-bobble performance of the 'Jacks, the Peli
cans dropped Sunday' game on
innings. The los shoved the Klamath two full games back of
the Crater.
Saturday night the Klamath
hopped on Clyde Carlstrom for
a dozen runs in the first three
innings to sew up the game right
there. Eleven Pelicans, faced the
lean Dorris hurler in the first
and splattered four hits which
two walks and three Dorris er
rors made good for seven runs.
Paul Crapo s home run in the
first brought out a Dorris pro
test when the ball bounded over
the left center fence. The 'Jacks
claimed he should have been
held to a double but the umpire
ruled it a homer. Eyestone and
Hampton scored ahead of the
sharpshooting Pelican out
fielder. Dorris' principal threat came
in the sixth when they assem
bled five hits and made 'em good
for four runs.
Virge Hayncs gave the 'Jacks
12 hits. in the Saturday game
and the Pelicans totaled an even
dozen off Carlstrom.
Sunday Ken Benham held the
invaders to one hit until the
fifth. Earl Brooks got the single,
stole second and scored on an in
tield out.
In the filth, however, Red Tol
bert's nine slashed out five hits
and, with two walks and a sacri
fice, tallied six runs.
The Klamaths loilowed with
one of their own as Larson, safe
on a fielder's choice, romped
home on Gross' double. In the
sixth, the Pelicans counted
thrice, one of 'em a homer by
Hauield over the left field
barrier.
They knotted the count with
two in the seventh and one in
the ninth. The tying run was
driven in by Crapo with a long
double. He later tried to swipe
home but was tagged out with
what would have been the win
ning run.
Dorris tucked the game away
in the tenth with three.
The locals outhit the visitors,
14-11 in the Sunday game. Bill

After Collapse With 77
By GAYLE TALBOT
CHICAGO, June 27 P) By-'
ron Nelson, shaken by one of the
most amazing collapses in the
history of big-time golf, went
out bleakly today to battle Clay
ton Heafner of Linvllle, N. C, in
an 18-hole playoff for $2500 first
money in the Tarn o'Shantcr '
open tournament. The starting
time was noon PWT.
Nelson, the tall ex-Texan, was
a woebegone figure, and a lot of
exceptionally smart money had -
aayt Kea.'ucr
Byron Nelson
been bet over-night that he
would lose to Heafner, the blond
giant who won the Mahoning
Valley tournament at Gerard,
Ohio, a few weeks ago with an
astonishing 72-holc total of 284.
It was a crusher what hap
pened to Nelson yesterday. Ono
of the world's great golfers, he--shot
a miserable 77 over a
course whose true par is about
70, to dissipate a lead that had
looked impregnable and finish
in a tie with Heafner, each with
280 strokes for the four rounds.
Heafner, having posted an or
dinary 72 on his final round, and
i harboring no real hope ot any-
thing better than second or third
money, became one of possibly
J0.000 spectators who, watched
almost unbelievingly as Nelson
blew sky-high in the course of a
stretch duel with Lawson Little.
Nelson started the day five
strokes in front of Heafner;
eight ahead of Little. He was
considered to be "in," the clos
ing round to be a mere formal
ity. Yet when they began trying
to move the record golf crowd
out of Tarn o'Shanter last night
the scoreboard read: Nelson 280,
Heafner 280, Little 281. Nobody
else was even close. Harry Not
telbladt of Avon, Conn., held
the next place' all by himself at
284. ........ ... ,
