LEADERS FAIL

DAY'S MARKET
By VICTOR EUBANK
NEW YORK. July 21 P)
Rails, steels and specialties were
propped by further light invest
ment demand in today's stock
market although many leaders
were unable to attract a follow
ing. ,
Turnover approximated only
250,000 shares.
Gains for favorites ran to a
point or more at the best. Trends
wavered In many cases after
mid-day and minor losses were
well distributed in the closing
hour. Bonds tilted forward in
spots.
Santa Fe went Into new high
ground since 1030. Paramount
Pictures common and preferred
touched new peaks for 1942. In
front most of the day were At
lantic Coast Line, U. S. Steel,
Bethlehem, American Telephone,
Allied Chemical, Boeing, Glenn
Martin, Sears Roebuck, Inter
continental Rubber and U. S.
Gypsum.
Lacking climbing stamina
were Western Union, Anaconda,
Kcnnecott, U. S. Rubber pre
ferred, Pullman, Westinghouse,
General Electric, Johns-Manville
and United Aircraft.
Earnings statements were none
too pleasing. General Electric
had to contend with a six-months'
showing of 72 cents a share
against 90 cents In the 1941 per
iod. Closing quotations:
