It was close to 7:30 p.
when Sacramento nnd Seattle
finished five hours and 22 min
utes (playing time) 'of Coast
league baseball. The shadows
wcro long, the fan hungry, the
players staggering.
But to a pair of rlghthandcd
pitcher and their employers, the
extended effort seemed eminent
ly worthwhile. For Clarence
Beers hi two hours and 20 min
utes work meant a 0-3 Sacra
mento victory over Seattle. For
Bllx Donnelly, his three hours
nnd two minutes' toll was re
warded with a 3-1 decision over
the same club.
These are the two fllngers who
more than any others have been
responsible for Sacramento's
phenomenal rise from last place
to first. Yesterday they wcro In
fine form, each outlasting three
Seattle pitchers on the long
march to victory.
Beers, in nction for nino In
nings, gave up eight hits. But
none was good for more than one
base, and only two come In the
last five Innings, during which
Seattle went scoreless after es
tablishing an early 3-2 lead. Dick
Barrett, driven to cover in the
sixth, was tho loser.
The double victory gave Sac
ramento the series, four games
to two, despite a 5-0 defeat Sat
urday, but even so the Senators
lost ground for the week to the
second-place Los Angeles Angels,
who, likewise double winners
yesterday, finished with a 5-2
record against Hollywood.
The Sunday opener in the
south was as hair-raising as Its
11-10 score would Indicate. Hol
lywood scored seven times In the
second inning; Los Angeles eight
tlrr.es in the second nnd third.

eight. In the 2-1 opener, In
which Mel Mnkzcra's homer
proved a decisive blow. Syd
Cohen blanked the Padres, 2-0,
on three hits In the seven
inning nightcap.
Snn Francisco swept Its twin
bill with Onkland, 8-2 and 3-0,
thus rallying to take the series,
four games to three. Saturday
it was Oakland's turn, 7-5.
This week's series put Port
land at San Francisco, Oakland
at Sacramento, Seattle at Holly
wood, and Los Angeles at San
Diego. Tho Seattle-Hollywood
engagement starts Wednesday

the annual classic to wind up on
the Pacific coast?

with.K. M. Landis, baseball,
commissioner, and the New
Yorker's journey immediately
revived talk heard in every ma
jor league dugout during the
past few days.
Three changes in the rule
have been proposed and all havo
as their objective the gathering
of funds for army and navy re
lief and for USO.
Under plan No. 1 the serieg
would be extended to nine games
from the present seven with the
service funds benefitting from
the extra contests.
Plan No. 2 has the pennant
winners deciding the world title
in seven tilts before going on a
barnstorming tour of the coun
try, i
Most revolutionary is plan No.
3 which would have the compet
ing nines play two games in the
home park of each before open
ing a road journey of nine to 11
games, each contest to count to
ward the championship. ,
Under that setup the4eclding
battle might be played In such
places as Toledo, Denver or San
Francisco.
