SALEM, March V CAP) With
only three day to go before he
walks into Oregon's lethal gas
chamber, John Soto, 17-year-old
triple slayer, Is "as happy-go-lucky
as can be," Deputy Ward
en Gene Halley of the state
penitentiary said Tuesday.
"He talks like he wants to
die," Halley said, but he toid
me he tried to commit suicide
three times before he came here.
"Soto eats good, sleeps good,
and ploys the radio all the time.
He told me he likes it here In
the prison, saying It was Just like
a big hotel. In fact, he said it
was the best place he ever lived
in."
Soto Is scheduled to die at
8:30 a. m. Friday.
His only chance is to obtain
a commutation of sentence from
Governor Charles A. Sprague,
but the governor's office has
Indicated this Is extremely
doubtful.
The youth, who had escaped
from the Sonoma, Calif., state
home for feeble-minded, commit
ted his crime at Hermlston on
Sept. 25, 1941, being convicted
of killing Kenneth L. Gorsuch.
He also killed Gorsuch s mother
and her nephew. Soto lived with
the family, and says he killed
them because the mother, learn
ing he was wanted at Sonoma
state home, threatened to turn
him over to the police.

Dinner tables are the site of an
economic war with a rapidly
expanding front, a survey of
price control measures on foods
disclosed Tuesday.
The front ranges from canned
tomato juice through an extend
ed menu to canned peaches, and
the housewife who shys from
fresh vegetables can have a com
plete price-control meal, with
meat included.

tration authorities, leading the
campaign against inflation at
meal time, are believed ready to
assume the offensive against ad
ditional salients in the near fu
ture, if it should be necessary,

(AP) For the fourth consecu
tive year Oregon topped the na
tion in 1941 as a lumber pro
ducer with 6,263,000,000 board
feet. Washington's total was 5,
155,000,000. The figures were those of the
Pacific Northwest Forest and
Range Experiment station here
on lumber production in the
northwest for 1941.
Production for the two states
was up 17.7 per cent over 1940,
Oregon's increase being 20.4 per
cent, Washington s 13.5.
