E III OLD MEDICI CHICAGO. Mnrch 12 In a cheap, 30-ycor-old mcdirlne, the University of Illinois Medical collcgo has discovered a potent remedy for prematura births. The mcdlcino is a hormone ox truct from thu corpora lutca of sows. It hns been used for years for the nausea of expectant mothers, but tho life-saving po tency went unrecognized. This extract costs about 40 conts un ampoule, a little glass tube-full, compared with about $1.23 for the other premature birth remedy. Thu latter might cost $130 if given throughout pregnancy, while the Inexpen sive one would be less than $23. Furthermore, the low cost medicine appears to be Just as effective. Its development is re ported by Dr. F. H. Falls, pro fessor of obstetrics and gynecol ogy and head of tho department. Tho 40-ccnt remedy, used in Cook County hospital here on 300 cases of threatened prema ture births, saved 80 per cent of the babies. At the same time, In 30 similar cu.scs not given the extract, (10 per cent o f the mothers lost their bublcs. Practically identical results were obtained in 200 cases treated in the tamo way at tho Research ond Educational hos pital of tho University of Illin ois. This medicine, however, docs much more It has stopped pre mature labor. It has helped to control hemorrhane in a condi tion known as ablatio placenta, which kills unborn babies. It has also delayed hemorrhage from another serious complica tion, placenta previa, until the babies developed sufficiently so that they could bo taken by caesarean operation. Dr. Kails sold tho indications are that the extract may contain on unknown hormone. The ex istence of this substance may have been masked for years by the fact that the corpora lutca, source of the extract, produces also a well known hormone, progesterone. After its discov ery progesterone was synthe sized by chemists, who mode it fron soy beans. This synthetic product had tho same chemical formula as the natural progestarone and should have been as effective for pre mature birth. But it was not. That unusual circumstance led Dr. Falls to suspect that some other, unknown hormone, was tho potent factor. mm r3 O- EVERY SATURDAY NITE Minli by OREGON HILL BILLIES KEN LEO'S -GARAGE 2nd and Main MOTOR TUNE-UP BRAKE SERVICE MOTOR REBUILDING Honest, Reasonable Service ' 1 Use Your CREDIT!
