KNOTTED TREE OF SPRAGUE RIVER This knotted tree trunk
is,, a relic of early days la Klamath county, belonging to the
family of George Hum, pioneer. The huge knot is held in the
picture by William Hum, son of the pioneer. As Klamath Agency
farmer, the elder Hum was in charge of a trail-blazing crew in
1898 which laid out the present Sprague River road. He found
a growing pine tree which had been tied in a single knot by
some passing traveler. The tree had grown with that knot in it
trunk for some years. Hum took it home and made a table with
the knotted trunk as the center leg. It was recently brought from
theHum basement, where for many years it had been stored.
