Toastmistress Club
Hears Members Talk
Many Interesting Topics Brought Before Group
At Monday Night Meeting
"America and World Understanding," a Reader's Digest
program outline, was the subject for the evening meeting ot
.the Toastmistress club, held Monday evening, February the
sixteenth, at Fremont school, and proved Intensely interesting
to the members and their guests. Toastmistress for the eve
ning was Mrs. Keith Rice, who stressed the importance of
America's responsibility after the war, in helping to organize
a world at peace with law and Justice prevailing.
Harry Scherman's
"The
Last Best Hope of Earth" was
briefly reviewed by Mrs. W.
H. Hibbard, in the introduc
tory talks. Referring to h I s
.'principle of the economical
and cultural ties which so in
tricately bind the nations of
the world, Mrs. Hibbard said
that a permanent peace would
never be won until political
unity would match the cul-
tural and economical unifica
tion which now existed. "This
political unity," she said, "can
only be brought about when
each nation forgets some of
her own deep interest for the
benefit of humanity. That is
The Last Best Hope of
Earth'."
Mrs. Emmett Chidester's
topic, "The Perplexing Argen
tine," from John Gunther'i
"Inside Latin America," fo
cused attention on our south-
; em neighbor, whose roots and
instincts have been largely
European, seeming almost like
a projection of Europe into the
western hemisphere.
"Notes for Your Guidance,"
' a British pamphlet of advice
given to the Royal Air Force
pilots who are in the United
States for flight training, was
, presented by Mrs. Hiram F.
Murdoch, who gave a clear
picture of America as the Eng
lish see us. The English boys
re instructed to learn to like
and understand Americans,
aaid Mrs. Murdoch, as under-
: standing is almost as import
ant as their technical training.
In the absence of Mrs.
Archie Beckwith who was to
have discussed "Stalin's Amer
ican Power," by Max Eastman,
' Toastmistress Mrs. Keith Rice
' briefly summarized the sub
ject stating, "It is paradoxical
that we find ourselves allied
' with a nation whose principles
' of government are so diametri-
cally opposed to ours."
. After the summary of the
topics by the toastmistress,
questions and discussion were
invited from the audience who
responded with interesting
and debatable questions.
Mrs. Emlle Buzaid was can
did critic for the evening and

SHOP OWNERS
HONOR ATTORNEY
AT DINNER MEET
The Klamath Falls unit of
the Oregon Association of
Ucuuty Shop Owners and Op
erators held a dinner honoring
their stato uttorney, Mrs. John
Y. Richardson of Portland, on
the evening of February the
sixteenth at the Elk hotel. A
largo representation was also
present from Lakcview.
A stirring tolk was delivered
by Mrs. Richardson In regord
to the bill to bo presented In
Salem during the coming leg
islature. Many points of In
terest to the profession and
general public were covered
hut the point stressed was the
fact that unity of the beauty
shops Is necessary to acquire
laws necessary to bring Oro
gon up to the standards ot
neighboring states. Mrs. Rich
ardson stated that lows us they
exist In Oregon regarding tho
beauticians are not sufficient
to Insure better working con
ditions for the beauty operator
or do not encourage public
confidence.
Another point of gain, ac
cording to Mrs. Richardson, Is
the abolition of fraudulent ad
vertising whereby the public
will be advised that the beauty
service will either be com
plete, with all services Includ
ed In the price quoted, or ad
vertised exactly as they are
to be rendered. In other
words, Mrs. Richardson stress
ed there must be no further
bait advertising.
Now more thun ever before
Mrs. Richardson considered
that morale is a woman's busi
ness but that, In coming to the
front, she can only be as smart
as she feels.
"In other words," she said,
"if a woman Is well groomed
she Is more confident of her
self and her capacity as a
member on the home front."
The convention of the Ore
gon association will be held
March first, second and third
at Grants Pass when final
plans will be made for the
coming year which includes
the bill to be presented at
Salem. Mrs. Gladys Stephens
Is president of the Klamath
