C3IPB THE END? ' Rumori say that the tire situa tion may result in complete term ination ol the Klamath County B league basketball schedule for the balance of the 1941-42 sea ton. The recent deciiion of the Klamath county school board halting the use of school buses for athletic team transporta tion to and from games has . resulted In the use of private cars since a week ago. Now, however. Individual car own i ers are figuring that if the school board, with a priority, feels It Inadvisable to squander rubber on athletics they, too, 'Can't afford it. Which leaves some 80 B cir cuit athletes with no way to travel. It's possible, however, that the schedule may merely be juggled in such a manner as to eliminate long hops. Which could easily mean that Chiloquln, currently leading the basketball race, and Gilchrist, tied for fifth, would be left out in the north Klamath county cold. Six of the small circuit schools Malin, Merrill, Bly, Bonanza, Henley and Keno are within comparative shouting distance of each other and could conceivably arrange the slate's balance so that only a minimum amount of travel would be neces sary. . The Panthers and Loggers, however, are more or less iso : lated from the circuit's core ' and would probably have to drop out. Particularly Gil christ, almost 100 miles north , of Klamath Falls. Perhaps the schedule may be rearranged to permit two games j either doubleheaders or two consecutive night's play on each trip in order to finish the winter program. Thusly the traveling would be halved. . Or possibly a tournament held In the Klamath Union high school gym to determine - the championship. The tourney could be staged later, mean ;. time the B boys could split ' into intramural groups or - schedule games on a catch-as-catch-can basis with nearby : quintets In order to maintain j the competitive . element of ? athletics. : Any way you glance at it, it's a makeshift situation at best and unfortunate at a time when the county, as the nation, needs ath letics and the relaxation and edu cation they employ. Tigers Seeking Infielder Chorley Gehringer Out As Plover, May Coach By WATSON SPOELSTRA DETROIT, Jan. 15 (.-P) The Detroit Tigers nave retired Char ley Gehringer, slick fielding sec ond baseman, by omitting him from their 1942 playing roster, but the door to his rerun to baseball is more than slightly ajar. The Detroit management is en deavoring to interest the 38-year-old mechanical man infielder in a coaching job under Manager Del Baker where he conceivably would undergo the usual condi tioning process and thus might be available for active duty in an emergency. But thus far the untalkative Gehringer, pursuing his business as a manufacturer's agent, has been somewhat more than characteristically silent. For the first time in 19 years the name of Gehringer was miss ing from the Detroit squad list when it was :innounced yester day. To fill the second base job the Tigers nominated Jimmy Bloodworth, acquired by trade from Washington, and Lambert (Dutch) Meyer, former Texas Christian footballer purchased two years ago. Dodson Says It's a Cinch To Repeat in Oakland Open OAKLAND, Calif., Jan. 15 VP) 'The only reason I made the trip west this year," said voluble Leonard Dodson, "was to repeat my victory in the Oakland open. This is my course here. Watch my smoke!" The Kansas City golfer referred to Oakland'! Sequoyah Country club, a par-70 layout over which he operated last year with sufficient skill to beat out Ben Hogan and E. J. "Dutch" Harrison in a playoff for the biggest piece of the annual $5000 pot. Dodson and some 185 other professionals and amateurs began trie vz-noie swing again today," and in this group there was a goodly number ready and per haps qualified to cool the de fending champ's aspirations to another $1200 purse. This list included both Harri son and Hogan, the latter fresh from victory in the opulent Los Angeles open. It numbered also Sammy Snead, Harry Cooper, Dick Metz and Jimmy Demaret, champions in the other four previous years that this Oakland stop has held a regular place on the winter tournament itinerary. Sequoyah is no pushover course, not even for the 35 or so nationally known pros who will try to mortify its proud greens and natural hazards be tween now and Sunday night. Jan. 15 UP) Faced with the problem of car rying on through the war with what players the armed forces don't need and the professionals don't want, the U. S. The first step in adjusting the USLTA program to wartime re quirements will be taken at the orsanization's annual meeting here Saturday, with President) Holcombe Ward advocating a plan to "get people out of the grandstand and onto the courts." Specifically, Ward will request the executive committee to can cel the national indoor tourna ment for men this year and let the 6utdoor championships, both singles and doubles, be decided in one tournament at Forest Hills Instead of separately as In the past. If Ward's plan is approved, the one national outdoor tourna ment for both men and women in singles and doubles will be held here August 27 to Septem ber 7. The plan does not in volve the women's indoor meet. "Most of the ranking players among the men probably will be in service by then," Ward said, "but there will be many young men under military age to fill their places, thanks to the asso ciation's Junior development pro gram." In the future. Ward said, the USLTA will pay less attention to the first ten ranking players and more attention to the rank and file.
