A little profit selling today
threw the stock market off the
forward pace followed In the
previous session. '
Softness of the steel tended
to put light pressure on other
leaders and copper and rub
bers, favored on Tuesday, gave
an Indifferent performance.

Financial office suggested
the lack of followup buying
could be attributed mainly to
tax consideration and fear of
more bad new from the Pa
cific. The decision of the presi
dent to name Donald M. Nelson
as chief of a new war produc

influence was limited by ques

RYE LEADS GRAINS
ON COMEBACK PATH
CHICAGO. Jan. 14 W) Afte
declining fractions early in the
cession, the grain market today
rallied, led by rye which ad
vanced a much as a cent a bush
el at one time.
Purchasing of rye as well as
other cereals was attributed
chiefly to dealers covering short
sales made on yesterday's break
and to consuming interests, in
cluding mills and other proces
sor. Trade was restricted, how
ever, by uncertainty regarding
the price control bill to be
worked out by the congressional
conference committee. Substan-.
tlal amounts of government corn
and wheat sold to commercial
interests recently have been ab
sorbed without material price
concessions, except for yester
day's setback.
Wheat closed i-1 cent higher
than yesterday, May $1.31s,
July $1.32; corn Ic lower to le
higher, May 861-ic, July 871-lcJ
oats s-ic up; rye 1-1 Ic higher;
soybeans unchanged to Ic high
