Effects of the shortage were evidenced this week when Great Lakes Steel corporation, Detroit subsidiary of National Steel cor poration, shut down four of its 16 open hearth furnaces for lack of enough scrap to keep them going. Sharon Steel corporation, with plants in the Youngstown, Ohio, district, has announced it expected to shut down an open hearth furnace late this week for the same reason. NLRB Hearing for Weyerhaeuser Crew Set January 19 A long-awaited national labor relations board hearing on an AFL representation petition for woods employes of the Weyer haeuser Timber company will be held Monday, January 19, in the city library clubrooms, it was announced Friday by the CIO. Tho AFL Lumber and Saw mill Workers union la asking to be named the sole collective bar gaining agent for over 350 Wey erhaeuser employes. The CIO International Woodworkers of America is intervening. Leaders of both factions re gard the hearing as one of the most important yet held in the basin area. Both hope that vic tory for their union will lead to eventual organization of an es timated 900 Weyerhaeuser mill employes in the same group. It was generally accepted that an NLRB conducted election would result from the hearing. The meeting will start at 10 a. m. Copco Crews Work On Small Jobs California Oregon Power com pany crews, handicapped by weather conditions, are working on only small jobs In the basin area, Sam Ritchey of the firm said Friday. Chief among the smaller proj ects is one of relocating a line on the west side of the airport. Water crews are at a standstill, Ritchey said. FROZEN DUMB CHICAGOJVP) Running home in subzero cold, Louis Sabatini, 14, slipped on soft ice and fell against an iron light pole. His tongue hit the pole and instantly froze to it, so tightly that he couldn't even free it with the loss of some skin.
