Dr. Douglas S. Corpron, who
will speak at the 11 o'clock serv
ice Sunday at the First Christian
church, Is the doctor In charge
of the Luchowfu Christian hospi
tal, Hofel. China, supported by
churches of Disclplrs of Christ
through the United Christian
Missionary society. This Is the
only hospital with facilities for
major surgery for radius of
over 100 miles.
Dr. Corpron received his
training at the state university,
Eugene, Oregon, the University
of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and
the University of Cincinnati. He
was married to Grace Chapman
In 1922, and the next year they
went to China as missionaries.
Except for one year spent in
language study, their whole
service has been at Hofel,
Tho doctor is an excellent
manager, and has built a won
derful institution on foundations
laid by preceding missionaries
at this station. In spite of the
difficulty of transporting heavy
machinery between Shanghai
and Hofel, he succeeded In es
tablishing an electric light plant
and x-ray department. Caring
for the sick and Injured through
floods, drought, famine, war and
banditry is the daily routine.
In the spring of 1927, anti
forcign riots drove the mission
aries out of Hotel as well as out
of other stations of China. How
ever, as soon as it was possible
the Corprons returned to build
an even greater work. Again in
1937, they were hindered from
returning to China after fur
lough because of the invasion of
the land, but In 1939 found the
way clear and they again re
turned to Hofel.
These last three years have
been of utmost significance to
Christian missions in China. Dr.
Corpron tells of the great Im
portance of the Christian hospi
tal in this Isolated community
of occupied China.
