Average Car Can Be Good
For 10 Years, Tests Show
fly DAVID J. WILKIE
(First ot Ueven Articles)
DETItOlT, Jun. U (Wide
World) If you ura one of the
2H,UUU,UUU persons in tho Unitud
Status who own passenger auto
mobiles, you would do well to
treat your car with consideration
because you ara going to huva
difficulty replacing It.
You may not need that re
placement for another your or
lor 10 yeara, depending on thu
general condition of tha car you
now own. It has been estimated
authoritatively that the "average
hfo of tho uvurugu car," is ubout
eight yrurs, during which period
Iho vehicle goes through suvoral
ownerships und varying degrees
of Judicious IIH.
But every car built In the laat
decade can ba kept In satisfac
tory operation for at loust 10
yours If Its owner so willed and
was Inclined to devote Just a lit
tle personal attention to It each
day.
This writer recently drovo a
car that for test purposes had
been In dally operation for near
ly a year and had piled up 03,
U00 miles. It had been given
only tho normal, prescribed
mulntennnce, plus four changes
of spark plugs, three fun belts,
one valve reconditioning, one re
placement of battery and Igni
tion cables, two brake adjust
ments, one carburetor overhaul
and one chunge of tires.
Thla may sound like u lot of
service work on thu car, but It Is
worth noting that the total mile
ago represented approximately
nine years of average driving
and the car In appearance and
handling actually waa "as good
as new."
Tha normal, prescribed main
tenance, of course, Included reg
ular chassis and body lubrica
tion, tire inflation, buttery care,
periodic replacement of the car
buretor air intake cleaner
screen, regular oil changes, mi
nor tune-tips, changes of trans
mission and differential lubri
cants and general body cure.
You will not be ubla to replace
the tires on your car with nuw
ones and you may have difficulty
obtaining some of the other re
placement purta under the Im
pact of the wur emergency.. You
will be able lo gut must of the
service operations outlined, how
ever, becauso many of the deal
era who heretofore have relied
on new and used cur sales for In
come are emphasizing their read
iness to repair and service any
vehlclei.
Moreover, there are going to
be a lot of backyard repair
shops, oporuted by competent
mechanics thrown out of regular
employment by the suspension of
car production.
But you can avoid much of
the expense and necessity for
thc.no services by following a few
very simple practices In hand
ling your cur from day to day.
Granted that your car Is In
"averago" shape now, that your
tires are In fair shape and that
you con continue to got gasoline
and oil you can reasonably count
upon several years of essential
use.
In succeeding articles of this
series, I will outline some of the
things you can and should do to
keep your car in operation and
out of the repair shop."
WASHINGTON, Jan. 8 UP)
Responsible military officials
said today It Is "definitely In the
cards" that Germany may use
her seppellns In token raids on
east coast cities of the United
States.
The nazls, these sources be
lieved, still huve the two dirig
ibles which bora tho Swastika at
the war's outbreak the trans-Atlantic
veteran, Graf Zeppelin,
and the great LZ-130, sister ship
of the llindenburg which was de
stroyed by fire at Lnkehurst, N.
J., in 1037.
Either diriglblo could be fitted
to curry up to 10 bombers within
easy striking distance of the At
lantic coast and could hover off
shore while the planes loosed
destruction on the cities, experts
hare said. Or the zeppcllns,
themselves, could undertake a
suicide mission and do their own
bombing.
President Roosevelt, In his
message to congress Tuesday,
acknowledged that the enemy
might try air attacks on great
population centers In an attempt
at "terrorizing our people" and
undermining morale.
In the east, navy aircraft ex
perts noted, the tendency was
to think of such possibility In
terms of surface aircraft car
riers, but they recalled tho well
authenticated report that Ger
many built a dirigible in the first
World war for the express pur
pose of bombing New York.
Only male vaporer moths

LONDON, Jan. 8 UP) The
ministry of economic warfare
said Wednesday that Germany is
producing moro planes, tanks
end submarines than In the
spring of 1941, although tha
over-ell production of arma
ments has fallen slightly below
the peak level reached at that
time.
The ministry ssld the Ger
mans were planning to turn out
more planes, but their full alms
In submsrlno production has
been impeded by the RAF.
Armaments production in Ger
man Europe, outsido of Germany
are not anything like fully util
ized In Franca because of the
shortage of raw materials, in
Czechoslovakia because of In
ternal trouble and in Italy be
cause of a shortage of workers
and food.
The ministry added that Ger
man war production was not
likely to be seriously restricted
during the next six months by
the metal shortage but that
stocks of some metals, particu
larly nickel and copper, ought
to be exhausted by the end of
the year at the present rate.
The nazls were also In urgent
need of Iron ore and paper pulp.

with instructions from the war
department to select sites fur
big guns on the island of Cor-,
regldor and to convert the Island
Into a fort.
"I think planea would have a '
hard time blasting the gun em-i
placements," he said. "All the ;
underground rooms are protect-1
ed by reinforced concrete 10
feet thick. !
"And unless the fortress falls j
the Japs will never get inside the
harbor. The harbor entrance is I
point blank range for those big !
guns and no ship that has been
built yet could make It If the j
Corregidor guns were firing.
"The island is shaped Just like '
a tadpole. Tho tall, which points
toward Manila, is low and flat.
The head, facing out to sea, is
steep end supports a high plat
eau on which the fortifications
are mostly built.
"I understand that tremend
ous additions have been made to
the work I began and which was
wholly a defense work to pro
tect the harbor mouth."

county, Illinois, came to Wash
ington state In 1870. In addition
to various positions he once held
the post of Seattle city engineer.

CHILOQUIN The enrollment
In the adult classes in commerc

The classes cannot be offered
