CONSOLIDATE ROUTES
SALEM, Jan. 8 W The state
department of agriculture sug
gested Wednesday that milk
companies could save consider
able rubber by consolidating
their routes.
He suggested that all distrib
utors take their milk to a central
depot, and then each company
be responsible for milk deliver
ies in a certain area of each
town.
PORTLAND, Ore. P) A
Portland man says he has been
driven to it. He signs his name
'Adolph (not Hitler) Goehring
(not Goerlng)."
War always creaks up family
life and family ties. It is up to
women to keep those ties as
strong and as real as possible.
Senator Hattle W. Caraway, Ar
kansas. -
I
CHICAGO. Jan. 8 W) Re
ports of increased amounts of
government wheat going into
commercial trade circulation
along with some 1941 grain re
deemed by producers from the
loan program weakened future
prices here today.
Profit taking and hedging
sales lowered wheat about a
cent,. with rye and soybeans off
correspondingly and corn and
oats almost as much.
Wheat closed 1-1 cent lower
than yesterday. May $1,281-1,
July $1,291; corn i-ic down,
May 851-lc. July 871-lc; oats t-lc
off; rye l-llc lower; soybeans
J-Ic off.
Kansas City reports indicated
purchases of Commodity Credit
Corporation wheat and of re
deemed 1941 grain were on the
largest scale so far this season
but not big enough to suggest
that general liquidation by pro
ducers was under way. A move
to permit harvesting of volunteer
wheat acreage In the southwest,
even though the allotment may
be exceeded, also attracted attention.

NEW YORK, Jan. 8(P) The
National Association of Manu
facturers, translating into every
day terms the war production
schedule called for by President
Roosevelt, Wednesday disclosed
the enormous scope of the pro
gram in material, time, space
and manpower.
The association said that the
president's demand for 125,000
planes and 75,000 tanks in 1943
meant turning out a plane every
four minutes and a tank every
seven minutes.
The president's estimated need
of eight million dead-weight tons
of merchant shipping in 1942
and an additional 10 million tons
In 1943 would require a sus
tained rate of about two ships a
day.
Attempting to estimate the
manpower requirements in the
aircraft industry alone, the asso
ciation said the 193,000 workers
engaged in making war aircraft
In 1940 would grow to 1,392,000
in 1943, or approximately one-
fifth as many workers as are
now employed in all defense
factories.
For aircraft production alone,
according to the association, the
floor space needed for the gi
gantic program would be about
140,000,000 square feet In 1943,
the equivalent or more than 1000
city blocks, or an area equal to
third of Manhattan Island in

20 MINUTES, LIVES
CHICAGO. Jan. 8 (UP If
your heart stops beating, you die
usually. I
But two Boston physicians,
writing in the January 10 issue
of the Journal of the American
Medical association, reported to
night the complete recovery of
a patient whose heart stopped
beating for 20 minutes during
a lung operation. -
Drs. Herbert D. Adams and
Leo V. Hand, said that as soon as
the stoppage was detected, heart
stimulants were injected. Arti
ficial respiration and massage of.
the exposed heart, to Induce cir
culation of the blood, was begun
immediately.
The patient began breathing
spontaneously shortly after the
heart resumed beating, and 25
minutes after his heart had stop
ped, his color began to return
and his breathing gradually be
came normal.
The operation was completed

days later "in good condition,"
they said. 7
Adams and Hand said the case
demonstrated that the period of
heart arrest "compatible with
normal recovery" is much longer
than formerly was appreciated.
Recovery is dependent upon ade
quate saturation of tissue, es
pecially brain tissue, with oxy
gen, they said, V
Although the authors admitted
that "the rationale of treatment
in this Instance was governed
more by urgency and expediency
than by any prepared plan or
organized regimen for treat
ment," they said that the case
"has changed some of our funda
mental concepts regarding car
diac resuscitation." ,1
Normal recovery In such case
Is dependent upon adequate sat
uration of tissue especially
brain tissue with oxygen.
Adams and Hand said. Prompt
and skillful administration 6?
artificial respiration and artifi
cial circulation were found to
accomplish this end.
Cardiac arrest may develop ajt
any stage during an operation or
post-operative procedure, tha
authors said, and "every surgical
team will at times be called Ob
to face' such a problem. j
