Dec. 26 UP) Tattered skeletons of huge han gars at the army s Hickam field stood today as gaunt evidence of the surprise Japanese attack on this placid pleasure-spot, and in them lay the twisted and charred wreckage of the many once- mighty guardians of Hawaiian skies. Army authorities allowed re porters to inspect targets of the Dec. 7 raid for the first time Tuesday. "This is no conduct ed tour," they pointed out. "You can see anything you want." There was great damage, some of which reflected a knowl edge on the part of the invaders as to just where to strike and at the same time showed how quickly the army made up its losses and waa bristling with readiness for another attack. It was at Wheeler field where the Japanese singled out vital targets and went after them, leaving less-important objectives untouched. Most casualties at Wheeler field occurred in the barracks, which were damaged heavily. Machine-gun bullets left their marks abundantly on many buildings and over the field reminders of the low altitude strafing that made it a matter of life or death for men to get their planes into the air. Alongside the black wreckage at Hickam field rolled a train- load of new warplanes, replace ments. All over the place just as at other fields were thousands of young men in khaki, putting things back into shane. The Japanese evidently didn't have such a good knowledge about the layout at Hickam field. Mickey Rooney Leader at Box Office for 3rd Year HOLLYWOOD. In a telephone conversation last night. Coach Roy S. Keene, at Davis, Calif., told Ron Gem- mell, sports editor of the baiem Oregon Statesman; "When the bombing began in Honolulu we were all eating breakfast at the hotel. We saw water splashing in the harbor and asked a waiter what it was. " 'It's a whale spouting,' the waiter said. "We all trooped out to watch it treating it as a joke. We didn't know until late in the afternoon what had happened. "The football boys were put on guard duty, guarding equip ment, and the women went to the hospital for duty." TMRETIIS Raiders had gone the' Una of hangars dropping thai explosives but turned on before reaching the end one, which contained many fin planes. Officers estimated that 41 planes raided Wheeler field In aa effort to cut off Pearl Harbor' air defense. Twelve or so war shot down by six American pi lots who managed to get their crafts off the ground in a hail oj bullets which killed three c4 their fellow fliers. "It's my opinion that the Jap planes came from two carriers,' one officer said. "All I saw wera naval planes. "If we'd had more planes up It would have been duck soup shooting the, Japanese down." The great Schofield barracks, one of the army's largest and finest posts, suffered least of all. The only damage there was dona by a US anti-aircraft shell which pierced the roof of an empty bar racks building. There was soma strafing, but it proved harmless. One machine-gun bullet plugged; a playing card at the center of a table where four cooks wera having a little game. Several bombs made crater 12 and 15 feet In diameter out side the barracks building. On fell within 100 feet of the hospi tal, but did no damage. The baseball field was covered with bomb craters.
