UNION ANGLE ON WEED
STRIKE
KLAMATH FALLS. Ore. (To
the Editor) Twelve hundred
men and women hit the bricks
at the Long Bell Lumber com
pany operation, at weed, Cali
fornia, Monday morning, to get
a humane wage ana worKing
conditions.
Last soring when the various
operations here In Klamath Fall
raised their wage scale 6c an
hour, the Long Bell operation
at Weed did not, and when the
union came Into the picture nd
the negotiation committee asked
for this Be Increase, they were
told bv the Long Bell manage
ment at Wed that their demand
was not moral.
The wage scale' In the box fac
tory at Weed Is low: 871c, 7sc
to 10c tn hour lower than here
In this area. In the sawmill it
Is 68c low or 8c lower than our
scale here, apd 10c lower than
many other places In the pine
area- Anyono going to work at
common labor has tg serve a two
or three months' apprenticeship
at 60c an hour before he can
draw 83c an hour as a regular
common labor workman.
The Long Bell company gave
their employee In the Longview,
Washington, plant a three-day
vacation with pay period this
summer, but when the employes
In Weed wanted a vacation witn
pay, the management refused to
consider lt. I presume it loo was
an immoral demand.

The employes of the Long Ball
operation at Weed have worked
under these conditions for years,
this strike has been coming on
for a long time, and the Long
Bell Lumber company have no
one to blame but themselves.
The union exhausted every pos
sible peaceful means to avoid
this strike. A federal conciliator
of the United States defense
mediation board wa called In
by the union, and Mr. Tennant,
the general manager of the Long
Bell properties, refused to con
cede anything. There wasn't
any alternative but to strike.
The strike wis not voted on
the spur of the moment. On
meeting was held by the union,
at which ell the Issues were dis
cussed, and then a vote waa
taken as whether or not a strike
should be voted on, and they
voted that they would hold a
meeting one week later, at which
time a vote would be taken as
whether or not the union would
vote to empower their negoti
ating committee to call a strike,
and that every member of the
ualon he notified In writing, tha
date this meeting was to be held,
and that a strike vote would
be taken. That was two week
ago Sunday night last. At this
meeting the membership voted
99 8-10 per cent to strike.
Last Saturday night when
final action wis taken, there
were 900 men and woman In
the hill, The vote wa unanl
mous to back up their commit-
vm. I saw women crying when
this vote was taken, wiping th
tear out or. their eye with one
hand and voting ye with th
other. Their cause 1 Just. They
are entitled to- the support of
every true American.
