ADVANCES HELD
MINQR MATTER
IN SOVIET WAR
By DeWITT MacKENZIE
(Special News Service)
Hitler's armies of conquest
continue to drive toward Mos
co., though with somewhat
lessened momentum, and the
Russians freely admit the grav
ity of their position.
Despite this we are faced
with the paradoxical problem
of whether the nazls actually
are rolling up a great triumph
or merely are piling up trouble
for themselves.
We must remember that the
c jx of this position is not
whether tho wis are compelled
to give ground, but whether
in doing they are able to
retreat in an orderly manner
to fresh defenses. That ia to
say, the thing which matter
isn' whether the invaders tak
territory, or cvr Moscow, but
whether the Russia military
machine is about to collapse.
The Germans themselves have
emphasize ' this point time and
again.
If the red armies are In fact
shattered and on the point of
disintegration even beings
wit' out any command what
ever as Berlin claim i last
week, then Hitler's hosts ar
indeed going plae-e. But If
it is tniJ that there still re
mains an organized resistance
in front of Germans, and
th ' the bolshevists are not
fighting haphazardly without
any guidance, then we have a
different picture.
The latest word from Mos
cow is that the reds are brine
Ing up reserves and are coun
terattacking at r. any point.
Now a disorganized and routed
army doesn't counter-attack; It
doesn't fall back syste-.atically,
resisting step by step.
When you get th- conflict,
ing claims all boiled down, It
seems clear that the Russians
are continuing- to put up a stiff
resistance in the face of super
ior strength. Still, this Is no
guarantee against a collapse of
the defense. The nazls ay
succeed In taking Moscow. Thi
is not, however, by any mean
a certainty.
Even should the capital fall
this wouldn't necessarily repre
sent a decisive blow. As I
have pointed out before, so long
as the bolshevist fighting ma
chine doesn't collapse, and re
tains its mobility and organ
ization, the. capture of Moscow
won't prec'ude the formation
of fresh red defence lines east
of . the capital. This would
m .1 continuation of the war
a terrific burden ijpr the
relch.
Private Fred Harten, son of
Mrs. Carmel Harten, Klamath
Falls, was recently awarded bay
onet and rifle medals, according
to word from Camp Wolters,
Texas, where Harten is stationed
with the 59th Infantry battalion.
Harten is a graduate of Klam
ath1 Union high school and was
a fireman for the Southern Paci
fic before entering the army.
