end of not only one of tha state's
oldost and most controversial
plant quarantines but a ban
which department officials de
scribed as the chief cause for set
ting up border stations to check
on plant entries into California.

quarantine, said the agricultural
offlcluls of western states and
those In California counties as
well had found It "Impossible
to enforce the alfalfa weevil
quarantine recently. Further

weevil was "very light."

piled with a resolution by tha
western plant board urging tha
elimination of the quarantine by
Joint action of the 11 western
states. The weevil Is not found
in the states of Washington and

seen," have confessed their part
in the killing of an aged grocer
during a robbery attempt a
week ago,
The members of the Juvenile
gang were described by Assist
ant District Attorney Richard
Chamberlain as George Llngcn
felter and Warren Brill, each
14 and of Hayward, where the
slaying occurred.
They were arrested, Chamber
lain said, on Information fur
nished by Everett Washburn,
18. and Walter Lee, 1$, who
were arrested In Ogden, Utah,
whence they fled on a freight
