SEATTLE, Aug. 1 (AP) Fun
eral service will be held here to
morrow for Willlem Burnett, 87,
widely known timber cruiser
and one-time sparring partner
for the barefisted fighter, Jake
Kilrain, He died at Tacoma Tues
day. Burnett, known to timbermcn
all over the nation cruised tim
ber until two year ago when an
attack of appondiciti finally
convinced him he wa old enough
to get out of the woods,
"The last of the old-time
cruiser," commented R. D. Mer
rill, president of Merrill & Ring,
"And a great fellow!"
He said Burnett, who had esti
mated timber atand In the
southern pine regions, the Caro
lina cypres swamps, the Great
Lakes timberlands and all
through the Paoiflc northwest's
Douglas fir forests, filed tho first
claim on the fabulously rich Iron
ore region north of Ouluth; sold
It for 60,000 and "took a vaca
tion" which consisted of joining
Kilrain' boxing stable for no
alary and paying hi own ex
pense. .
Mr. Burnett, and brothers in
Vancouver, B. C, and Ontaria,
survive.
Hop Yard Worker
Killed in Crash

Letter Locke, Independence hop
yard worker, was killed last
night when the car in which
he was riding struck the railing
of a culvert bridge two miles
west of here. James Allister,
whom itate police aid was the
driver of the car, and Fay Allis
ter, his brother, were injured
slightly.

Excellent Safety Record
Made At Air Corps Unit
According to Lt. Col. B. H.
Hensley, district recruiting of
ficer U. S. Army for Oregon, in
amazing record has been estab
lished at one of the larger air
corps training centers on the
coast. This record was made tor
safety. Since thi training cen
ter started in September 1040,
fatal accident have resulted at
the rate of only one (1) in every
3,300,000 miles of flying.
The safety record in the
training of aviation cadet and
enlisted men have not been es
tablished by chance. They are
the results of many factors. The
air corps' most valuable asset
are the pilot men in the cock
pits. Their safety and well being
is essential. For this reason, only
the physically fit are chosen for
aviation cadet training and only
well trained enlisted men main
tain the planes that are assigned
to them.
As to the actual training of
fered by the air corps there is
believed to be none superior.
All of the ships are kept In per
fect operating condition by
skilled enlisted men, trained at
the best aviation schools the
army has today, and are
equipped with accurate Instru
ments and safety devices. All for
safety. No less important is the
instructor. The Instructor Is an
officer of the United State army
air corps who has not only taken
and successfully completed thai
regular course to become an of-,
fleer and pilot, but alio ha been
required to take a special course
to adequately prepare him
qualified instructor. The avia
tion cadet and enlisted man la
alway in good hands,

Hamburgers Are Husky Fare
For Outdoor Picnic Dinners

James Beard is a big man who
looks like a football player who
ate tho other fellow's dinner,
too. He makes a wicked ham
burger. In his ' latest book,
"Cook It Outdoors," Jimmic
Beard leads off with this recipe:
"Choose a good piece of the
top sirloin or the boneless rump
and have your butcher grind it.
Buy a pound and a half or two
pounds (for outdoor appetites,
use half a pound per person )
Have it in one large lump and
be very careful not to squeeze
it or press it down. Mold it very
tenderly with your hands into a
round stcuk about It inches
thick. Pat do not press. If
you are broiling it, hove your
coals just at the peak of their
glowing heat and slip your steak
on a wire grill over the coals.
"Let it scar on one side, turn
quickly; .then seor very quickly
on the other side. Sprinkle
heavily with salt ond pepper
tho freshly ground pepper und
coarse salt are tho best and
turn again. Salt and pepper the
other side and by that time you
should have a perfect hambur
ger that is crusted on the out
side and tender and rare fn the
inside. Slice and eat with a
good slice of onion or with a
large helping of succotash and a
chunk of French bread."
Here's another gem of outdoor
cooking from Beard's "Cook It
Outdoors": 1
. BARBECUE SAUCE
"Saute 1 large onion, finely
chopped, in 1 cup olive oil until
onion is transparent. Add 2
cloves garlic, chopped, and 1 cup
chopped mushrooms, adding 1
tablespoon butter with the mush
rooms. Season with I teaspoon
each of orcgano, tarragon, and
Just a whisper of sage. A table
spoon of chili powder Is mixed
with 3 small cans of tomato
juice and added to the pan with
the other ingredient. Simmer
gently for about 40 minutes.
"Salt and pepper to taste, and
add s cup chopped olives and s
cup chopped sweet pickles, be
ing sure there is a tablespoon of
vinegar with the pickles- One
half cup chopped parsley will
help this out, too, if added at the
last moment.
