. MOUNT SHASTA At the
end of tho great rim which
forma a continuation , of the
eastern slope, of Mt. Shasta
lies Medicine, lake.' Spring fed,
Its live waters shimmer out
over tho bottom of a shallow
lava saucer, like quicksilver In
a miner's pan, Crowding it
close on all aides as though to
prevent Its escape are thick
stands of lodge pole pine. Not
fur from its western end juts
up tho solid mass of obsidian,
known as Glass mountain.
For six months of the year
the goddess of the - lake sleeps
In an ermine robe of anow, but
when June cornea she arises
from her virgin bed and takes
her place as the consort of Mt,
Shasta whose hand she seems
to clasp.
All summer long she holds
court to the intrepid traveler,
who Is bold enough to leave
the California state highway No.
89 for 27 miles cast of its
Junction' with U. S. highway No.
60 in the heart of the Shasta
rfatlonal forest and wind In and
out along the narrow dirt road
which climbs slowly up to this
magnificent amphitheatre, lying
at 6800 feet above sea level.
It was during the summer
moon of a y e a r in the late
1790'i at the western end of this
lake facing the morning sun
stood two Indian wickiups of
exceptional - size made from
poles of the native lodge pole
pine, covered with the tanned
deer hides with the hair re
moved and brilliantly painted.
On the larger of the two a fringe
of antelope skins covered the
extreme tip and lined the door
and smoke flap. Fastened above
the entrance were a pair of
magnificent antelope horns and
to right and left were painted
an antelope in full flight. This
was the lodge of Hu Lu Se Mo
(Running Antelope), chief of the
Shasta Indians.
The other lodge though small
er was more vividly painted and
was the hut of the tribal Sachem
or medicine man. Its lower walls
were covered with symbolic
figures of ferocious aspect de
signed to scare away any evil
spirits. Above on each nf (h.
four sides was a sleeping war
rior in run regalia. This was the
fetich of the tribe. "He Who
Sleeps in the Clouds" was their
guardian and was the name
which they gave to the vast
mountain which towered up in i
the center of their domain. The
spirit of the mountain was their
protector.
It was the time of the annual
testing of braves. There were
no women in this camp. They
had been left behind at the
big springs on the east slope
of the mountain which was the
permanent home of the tribe,
After the month of testing
and training of the new young
men of the tribe and the final
ceremonial which made them
warriors and at which they re
ceived their name, the women
of the tribe would loin them for
the hunting and harvest- moon
This year was a very solemn
occasion for the young lad . who
was the only son of Chief Run
ning Antelope for he was to
earn his name and take his
place as a warrior of the tribe.
During the day the young
lads exhibited their abilities
with bow and arrow, riding and
spear throwing, running and
wrestling. In the evening they
gathored before the hut of the
medicine man. They were there
taught their tribal history as
the medicine ' man related to
them the stories which had
come down through the mists
of thousands of years, the
young warriors who had earned
their right to be known as
member of the tribe during the
previous year acted out the
stories as they were told.
So were preserved by word of
mouth from year to year the
sacred record of the Shasta In
dian.
