FORT LEWIS, April 30 Of)
Thl I the story of how a dog
fight took precedence over a
"war."
In recent combat maneuv
ers, tho HI si brlgude's "reds"
were battling the 82nd bri
gade "blues." It was a shorn
.battle. It was forgotten mo
mentarily when a real battle,
between two regimental mas
cots started. Each was wear
ing tho color of the army to
which ho was attached.
While opposing troop
whooped and hollered, tho
dogs fought it out In "no man's
land."
The "blues" claimed their
dog won. The "reds" contra
dicted. Taking a cue from
umpire judging Inter-brlgado
maneuver, the soldier com
promised and called the honcst-to-goodness
fight draw.
FORT LEWIS. April 30 W
The United States 1 taking a
page out of Germany' military
book and will aires relentless,
rrushlng attack, Major General
Kenyon A. Joyce, commander
of the IX army corps, indicated
today.
Delivering a critique on tho
Q rst full divisional maneuvers
engaged in this week by the 3rd
and 41st divisions, the Jut-Jawed,
two-star 'general told all com
manding officers the offenae
"must ba seized at all cost."
Four Words
"A passive defense rarely ac
complishes anything but ulti
mate defeat." the corp com
mander ald. "The dofenslva
spirit 1 the defeatist spirit and
It never wins war."
If the IX corps, composed of
the two division and attached
troop based hero, adopt mod
ern warfare' "aggressive doc
trlna" it can "very confidently
look forward to success no mat
ter whnt It task may be," Gen
eral Joyce declared.
"Four words spirit, nerve,
technique and speed bring
success to any army, no matter
Qi-hat battle task It may face,"
io told tho officers, many of
whom were part-tlmo soldiers In
national guard regiment only
seven months ago.
Offensive Win
"A strong offensive win war.
All advantage lie with an army
that prepare adequately and
then takes the rapid offensive
The attack must thrust; the do
fenso must parry. Operation
are most difficult for defender
in thl day of rapid, mechanized
warfare. Initiative wlth-attack
Is mora Important than ever be
fore and it must be seized at all
cost,"
General Joyce said the war
games, In which 18,000 41st di
vision troops and 14,000 3rd
division men participated, wore
"exceedingly well conducted,"
but added, "they were not with
out the mistakes normal during
training period."
Q"A smart soldier," the gen
.nl added, "doesn't ninko tho
same mistake- twice"
Tho general left two military
suggestions before the men who
command the Pacific North
west' two divisions:
"Never substitute rote for
common sense. Don't be bound
by what's In tho books. Apply
individual resourcefulness."
"Remember battle ore won
by determined, small combat
groups, fearlessly and resource
fully led."
