Bufano Statue
University of
BERKELEY, Calif., Feb. 21
QJ.R) Th Daily Californian,
Student newspaper at the Uni
versity of California, today had
a genuine Beniamino Bufano
original statue parked behind
the copy desk, but nobody was
quite sure what to do with it.
Bufano, whose work ranges
from the sculpture of heroic
mountain-top colossae to the
delivery of morning news
papers, gave his three-foot
statu of a bear to the Califor
nian because the university's
symbol la the golden bear.
Bufano aaid it was an ab
straction of a grizzly bear, but
he had opposition. The creature,
Standing on four flat feet, had
beaver tail, a seal-like body,
deer-like ears and a boar-like
spout, with four jagged teeth.
Faculty members came over
from the art department and
condemned it enthusiastically.
Professor Eugen Neuhaus said
he waa disgusted.
