Scene of Nativity With Singing of Lovely Carols
Results in Inspirational Program
By MRS. B. C. THOMAS
The annual carol service presented by the music depart
ment of the city schools of Klamath Falls, was held at the
Methodist church, Sunday afternoon at half past three o'clock,
under the direction of Miss Lillie Darby.
A few new and many famil
iar old carols were sung by
the choruses of children from
the seventh and eighth grades,
assisted at the two pianos by
Miss Ola Mae Hough of Roose
velt and Mrs. Eleanor Robin
ion of Fairview school. The
first number, "O Tuneful
Hosts," by the girls' chorus
was followed by "Silent
Night" hummed by the four
part chorus of girls and boys.
Mrs. David Burgoyne of
Mills school played the vio
lin accompaniment for mem
bers of the echo choir seated
in the gallery at the rear of
the auditorium. One of the
outstanding numbers was,
":Fairest Lord Jesus," with
this choir of high voices sing
ing the obligate part. There
was something thrilling and
angelic in these pure, clear,
childrens' voices. After the
anthem, "O Holy Night," and
the carol, "O Little Town
of Bethlehem," was given the
beautiful violin solo, "Ave
Maria," played by Mrs. Bur
goyne, accompanied by Miss
Hough.
At this point the Angel of
Annunciation entered slowly
from the right. The part was
.' taken by Nina Robertson of
Mills and she read the Christ
mas story as given in the Gos
pel according to Luke.. Her
voice was strong and clear.
Her readings tied the pageant
and carols together. Mary,
played by Juanita Shinn, and
Joseph, played by Henry
Schortgen, seated themselves
near a manger illuminated by
li-ht rv,i v.. .!;
light During the singing of
carols the Shepherds appeared
and knelt before the manger.
After reading the story of
the coming of the Magi, the
three wise men appeared, each
bearing a gift carried by
lave, and these gifts . were
presented while the chorus
sang, "We Three Kings of the
Orient Are." Then a group
of little angels appeared carry-'
lng lighted candles and stood
near the nativity scene. Eigh
teen children dressed In the
costumes of foreign coun
tries came forward and stood
before the altar.
Tha children taking part in
the pageant were under tha
direction of Miss Frances Dix,
auditorium teacher at Mills
school. They showed an atti
tude of reverence and entered
Into the spirit of the Christ
mas story.
After the offertory the ac
tors in the pageant moved
lowly back down the aisle
while the entire chorus sang
"Now the Day Is Over." This
was followed by the Benedic
tion song from Wagner's op
era, "Parsifal," the words
"Bring Peace on Earth, Holy,
Holy, Lord," touched all
hearts.
These choruses have main
tained the high plane of ex
cellence established in the
past by Miss Darby. Their
work was tone perfect, with
fine smoothness, and splendid
response of feeling In singing.
Klamath Falls is to be con
gratulated on having such a
capable music department in
the schools. This pageant was
worthy of production in a
large auditorium where all
who love music could hear it.
