SALEM, Dec. 13 State
police investigated today to learn
how a pick-up order on a stolen
car was cancelled before the car
was recovered.
Lee Bown, deputy superinten
dent of state police, said a car
owned by W. M. Simpson of
Bend was stolen at Bend on No
vember 24, and a larceny war
rant was- issued against Robert
Oliver Currie, 17, Bend, who
was captured Wednesday in a
chase by state police near Rose
burg. Currie was driving Simp
son's car when apprehended.
On November 30, Bend police
advised. state police the car had
been recovered, and on the fol
lowing day, Currie obtained
transfer of title to the car at the
secreiary or states office here,
Bown said.
Bown said state police are try
ing to learn whether Currie had
telephoned the Bend police ad
vising that the car had been re

The Rev. Paul Roland Acker
man, Methodist pastor awaiting
sentence for draft evasion, today
filled out his registration blank.

SINKS GERMAN SHIP
LONDON, Dec. 13 (JP) The
British submarine Sunfish has
sunk a German supply ship of
about 4000 tons off the Nor
wegian coast, the admiralty an
nounced today.
The submarine also was report
ed to have hit and damaged a
German oil tanker of about the
same tonnage.
"H. M. submarine Sunfish
(Lieut. G. R. Colvln, R. N.) while
operating close to the Norwe
gian coast has torpedoed and
sunk a German supply ship of
about 4000 tons. The enemy ship
was deeply laden and it is prob
able that she was carrying a large
cargo of ore to Germany.
"Two torpedoes from H. M. S.
Sunfish were seen to hit and
the enemy ship broke up and
sank immediately.
"H. M. S. Sunfish also attack
ed a German oil tanker of about

Ralph C. Burnett, 39, Pasadena,
author of several volumes on'
civil law, was held In county
Jail Thursday night on charges
of assaulting the woman who
had won a Judgment against him
In a Justice court civil case.
Bennett Identified himself to
doputy sheriffs as former as
sistant state's attorney in Chi
cago, a former professor at the
University ot Oregon In 1014-13,
a former lecturer In law nt the
University of Southern Califor
nia, a Yale graduate, and a mem
bcr of Hhi Beta Kappa.
The assault, deputies said
took place Just outsido the El
Monte Justice court, where the
Judge had overruled Bennett's
motion to set aside a $130 de
fault Judgment In favor of Mrs,
Helen Chlvcrs, 32, Baldwin Park
sanitarium owner.
When a process server tried
to present further legal papers,
officers said, Bennett struck at
him with a hammer he carried
wrapped In a paper. Then he
struck Mrs. Chivers on tho side
of her head with the hammer,
deputies said, before they were
able to Intercede. The deputies
signed the complaint against
Bennett, charging him with as
sault with a deadly weapon.

BELGRADE, Dec. 13 (UP)
Jugoslavia and Hungary have
signed a pact of "eternal friend
ship" binding them to enter Into
consultation before cither takes
action likely to affect their
mutual interests in the Balkans,
it was announced.
The pact was signed by Jugo
slav Foreign Minister Alexander
Cincar-Markovlch and Hungar
ian Foreign Minister Count Ste
phen Csaky, here on a state visit.
The treaty provides Jugoslavia
and Hungary are to maintain
"permanent peace" and obligate
themselves to discuss all
questions affecting their mutual
interests.
