Murray, chairman of the Klam
ath county achool board,

high school with O. A. Steel,
NY A state radio engineer, and
Earl L Rice, NYA area director,
final plans were announced for
Inauguration of the course in
the near future.
t The project will be housed. In
the ground-level room of the new
gymnasium wing of the high
school building. The National
Youth Administration will furn
ish and install several hundred
Hollars worth of radio construc
tion and training equipment and
provide a full-time, well-qualified
supervisor, Rice announced.
The course will consist of two
sections, each operating for 80
class-hours per month. Each
section will accommodate about
12 enrollees.
The enrollees will be paid
$18.48 per month during the
course for 56 hours of productive
project work. The balance of
the 80 hours will be devoted to
classwork in radio, telegraph,
code operation and theory.
The project work, Rice said,
will consist of construction of
various types of radio equip
ment. Each assignee will be
required to engage in related
training in radio, telegraphy
(code operation), and will re
ceive theory instruction In cir
cuits, design, trouble shooting
and repair.
An NYA network radio station
will be established at the high
school, it was made known.
Object of the work experience
and training is to prepare young
people for paid employment in
various radio fields. The course
will require from six to nine
months for the average enrollee.
Those interested can register
at the Oregon State Employment
office at the Elk Hotel building,
or apply directly to the NYA
area office at Medford.
According to the National
Highway Users conference, the
average motor vehicle owner
in the United States paid 27.30
in excess of his fair share of
road costs in a single year.

Fifth Column Constitutes
Grave Danger for Americas

President Robert M. Ortiz, of
Argentina, in an interview
given to the United Press' Tues
day, warned the Americas are
faced by a grave crisis, with
subversive doctrines working
against democracy.
Ortiz appealed for a broad
program of cooperation by the
nations of America "to estab
lish their defense against foreign
perils."
The correspondent was re
ceived by Ortiz in a special
audience for the express pur
pose of discussing the inter
national situation, despite the
fact the president is still con
valescing fro ma serious illness
which five months ago forced
him temporarily to delegate his
powers to Vice President Ramon
S. Castillo.
Ortiz said he does not regard
as an imminent peril the
"physical occupation" of the
American continent, but the
principal danger lies in the
"Ideas of dissolution" now at
work. He declared he believes
a "community of Ideas," which
he regards as so necessary be
tween the nations of America,
must be considered only as a
complement to a program of
action or "technical coopera
tion" among the Americas.
He asserted the value of the
recent visits of the chiefs of
staffs ot armies of the Latin
American countries to the
United States, especially that of
General Guillermo Jose Mohr,
ot the Argentine army, will be
enormous.
Ortiz made It clear Argentina
approves of the United States'
plan for hemisphere defense and
that Argentina is willing to co
operate therein, thus confirming
previous United States dis
patches. He indirectly implied, how
ever, Argentina may object to
the establishment by Uruguay
of a powerful base at Punta
Del Estc, at the mouth of the
Plate river, asserting he had
no doubt that when the moment
arrived to decide on definite
locations for the establishment
of bases in Uruguay, "our tra
ditional friend, Uruguay, will
take our interests into consid
eration." State sales taxes on auto
mobiles, parts and accessories
amounted to $76,000,000 in the
year 1938. State gasoline taxes
were more than 10 times as
great, standing at $818,433,000
last year.
