MAN KILLED WHEN
TOW CAR WRECKED
AT GRANTS PASS
GRANTS PASS, Oct 21 lP)
Emmitt Jack Dix, about 32, of
Grants Pass, was fatally crush
ed In the pile up of a tow car
and his wrecked automobile
yesterday, Coroner Virgil Hull
reported.
Dix' automobile was being
towed after striking a deer on
the Redwood highway four
miles southwest of here. On a
downhill grade the damaged
car weaved, overran the tow
chain and piled into the tow
car, in which Dix and his wife
were riding, State Patrolman
Lyle Harrell said. Donald H.
Howell was driver of the tow
car.
Mrs. Dix suffered probable
rib fractures.

paign hit the "big push" stage
Monday, with both major par
ties ready for concentrated
drive that will carry through the
last two pre-election weeks and
up to the eve of voting day.
For the democrats, the cur.
rent week will see President
Roosevelt in an avowed "poli
tical" role, as he delivers the
first five addresses Intended, so
his own announcement said, to
"correct . . . deliberate falsiflca
tion of fact" by campaign foes
and to "give the true facts to
the public."
On the republican side, Wen
dell L. Willkie embarked on an
other closely filled itinerary of
many speeches and mneh mii
age. The republican presidential
nominee s scnedule will take him
from Wisconsin, where he makes
a major address tonight at Mil
waukee, eastward through Illi
nois and Pennsylvania to New
York.
To back up the personal cam
palgnh?!of its standard bearer,
each party marshaled a support
ing array of notables.

SALEM, Oct. 21 m Forest
fires on state and private lands
in Oregon burned over only
19,134 acres' during the 1940
fire season, which was one of
the most favorable in the his
tory of the state forestry de
partment.
Western Oregon fires burned
over 12,258 acres, compared
with 6876 acres in eastern Ore
gon.
The largest fire was that In
the Sunset district in northwest
Oregon, which destroyed 6000
acres.
Of the 915 fires, 285 were
caused by lightning, 176 by
careless smokers, 11 by incen
diarists, 89 by campers, 74 by
debris burning, 48 by logging
operators, and 12 by railroads.
The total loss will be an
nounced January 1.

VISITORS SET NEW
RECORD IN 1940
WASHINGTON. Oct. 21 fft
Visitors to the national parks
and monuments during the 1940
travel year ended September 30
totaled 16,741,855, a new rec
ord, Newton B. Drury an
nounced today.
The director of the national
park service reported to Secre
tary Ickes that one of every
eight persons visited some unit
of the federal park system. At
tendance was more than 1,000,
000 greater than In 1939.
Visitors to Oregon groups ot
the park system and the fig
ures for the preceding year
were:
Crater Lake national park,
252,482 for 1940 and 225,101
for 1939; Oregon Caves, 87,195
for 1940 and 56.218 for 1939.
