Leading stocks rose fractions
to more than 2 points today on
a moderate-sued buying wave.
The market generally came
close to duplicating the peaks
of the recent rally but lacked
the stamina to push into new
high ground.
Brokers said traders seemed
unwilling to follow through on
the advance, assuming it was
based chiefly on technical fac
tors and that tha uncertain out-
coma of the great battle of Eng
land was a hindrance to an ag
gressive move.
Steels, motors, aircrafts and
rails responded readily to the
early flurry of orders. After
these had been filled, prices re
sumed a listless drift but stiff
ened again toward the finish.
Transaction appro xlmated
400,000 shares.
Bonds on the whole were In
clined to accompany stocks on
the rise. Commodities were
mixed.
Up 1 to around 2 most of the
time were such leaders as Beth
1 e h e m, American Telephone,
Chrysler. Westinghouse, Du
Pont, American Smelting and
Douglas.
Other gainers included Great
Northern, General Motors, Bul
lard and Union Carbide.

Five Klamath county farmers
have organized the Williamson
River Cooperative near Modoc
Point, under the sponsorship of
the community and cooperative
services section, farm security
administration, announces Earl
A. Gardner, county FSA super
visor. Facilities of a combine har
vester will be made available for
use on member farms and a lim
ited number of other farmers In
the community may be enabled
to participate. The new cooper
ative is set up on a joint use
plan with members signing par
ticipation agreements on a Ice
basis.
Elmer K. Smith and Homer
M. Holt are manager-operators
of the service. Other members
include Roy Holt, Bruce Parks
and Jack Wolff.

AFTER RALLY FADES
CHICAGO, Aug. 28 (P) After
advancing as much as I cent at
one stage to the best level in al
most two weeks, wheat prices
today backed down and closed
with little or no change com
pared with yesterday's finish.
Buying came from mills and
local traders while selling was
associated with profit taking and
hedging operations in the north
west. Prospects of an enforced
settlement of Balkan affairs at
least for the time being caused
some dealers who bought on the
growing crisis to liquidate. On
the other hand, tying up of large
quantities of domestic wheat un
der the loan program checked
selling.

Original bag lines of good
French combing length fine
territory wools running good
French and staple combing
lengths brought 87-88 cents,
scoured basis. Graded combing
bright fleece wools brought 40
41 cents, in the grease, for three
eighths and one-quarter blood
grades.
