Val Douglas long ago bad de
cided in print too that Eddie
Cavalier, with hi dark, curly hair
na Handsome feature, was
, good-looking to be a fighter. Once
- she had hinted that he could hava
. been a greater riot as a slugger
Instead of the boxer he waa but
that b piefeiied to protect his
good looke.
That, in fact, waa what had
started the whole feud. He had
never forgiven her for that and
threatened to eject her bodily
himself if she tried to pay a visit
to .his Pomp ton Lakes training
camp.
Trom her position of vantage
overlooking the deck, Val Douglas
smiled sardonically. Here, at least,
was one training camp ha couldn't
pitcn nar out of.

Kelly was forced to wear make-

crew and cut down the legs of an

trunks. Both fighters wore heavy
sweaters to protect them from the

A MESSAGE sent down by the

"Plenty," Duffy moaned. "He

"But that ain't all," Duffy con
tinued. "The state boxing com

course, and they demand that we
put up a 95000 bond that well
, show up for weighln' in cere
monies cm time.
"Whom we get to dig op the
J8000 for Us?" Kelso demanded.
"We gotta think fast." .
"Well think about that later,"
Cavalier said Impatiently. -I'm
getting cold. Let's so Mike "
They climbed in between the
ropes and Kelso and Grimes
looked at each other questlonlngly.
st wasn't luce ma sua to be so im
patient Ha was like a race horse
at the post It was something new
and they didn't like it Duffy
Kelso forgot aU about the $9000
bond.
"Okay," Pop grunted, taking out
his watch. "Start slow and take
It easy."

("AVALIER danced forward and
flicked a straight left without
a preliminary motion of any sort
It caught Mike on the bridge of
his nosa and tilted his head back
sharply. .Alike looked surprised
and advanced mora cautiously.
Val tried to read Cavalier's ex
pression but the psdded hesd
guard he wore obscured his fea
tures. AU she could see were a
pslr of piercing eyes, and aha
dldnt like the way they were be
ing directed at Mike.
Mike Kelly went a good 195
pounds and there wasn't an ounce
of fat on him. The years had
slowed him down little but he
could still maneuver surprisingly
well.
Kelly tucked his chin behind his
left shoulder and went to work.
He muscled in close and worked
a short right to Eddie's ribs. Cav
alier jabbed him sharply twice in
the face but Mike let them bounce
off and shuffled in for more.
He swung a heavy right but
wraithlike Cavalier weaved away,
stepped Inside smartly and whis
tled a right cross to Kelly's chin.
Mike reeled back against the ropes
and Cavalier followed him.
"Hey, you're supposed to be
sparring," Pop Grimes roared, but
U Eddie Cavalier heard ha gave
bo heed.
K planted a savage left in
Mlke'a midsection and then as
Mike's guard came down he
banged over a solid right that
turned Kelly s face half way
around.
Doggedly, his mouth cut Mike
hung on and tried to bring his
weight into play. Eddie rocketed
a right to the heart and Mike
gasped.
Val rushed over to Kelso and
Grimes. "Fop, make him quit
that) He's Just letting his spite
out on poor Mike."
But Duffy Kelso was already in
the ring, breaking them up. "Take
it easy," he ordered softly, "You
okay, Mike?"
"Sure." said Mike. "Sure, rm
okay. Ha can bit that boy can.
Hits like a light heavy."
Val walked over to Cavalier
corner. "You're a heel," she
grated. "And I don't think I have
to tell you why."
He looked as though he were
going to reply hotly to her accusa
tion, changed his mind and fidg
eted with hla gloves.
