Coe Glade Widely Known for
Interpretation of "Carmen" ,
Anticipation is keen as music I
lovers look forward to the ap
pearance ot the first grand opera
to be heard in Klamath Falls
when the San Carlo Grand
Opera company presents Coe
Glade In the title role of "Car
men" on Monday night, March
23, at the Pelican theatre. The
opera comes here under the
sponsorship of the Klnmnth Ba
sin Cooperative Concert associ
ation. Tickets are available at
both the chamber ot commerce
and Pelican theatre.
Coe Glade, the best of Car
mens of the opera stage. Is an
American, born in Chicago. At
the age of 18 Fortune Gallo sent
her on tour with his San Carlo
Opera company to study oper
atic roles; an unusual practice
in the business of opera, as it
necessitated the added expense
ot railroading and living ex
pense of the young girl's mother
as well. However, the astute
grand opera producer soon
learned that his judgment was
correct as the unusual quality
of her voice and exotic beauty
of person, fascinated patrons of
the opera house and critics pre
dicted a great future for the
young mezzo-soprano.
After two seasons with the
San Carlo opera. Miss Glade
was engaged for star roles with
the Chicago Civic Opera com
pany and was soon widely
known as the greatest "Carmen"
of the opera stage. Today, her
sinuous embodiment of Carmen
is not unknown in all parts of
the country for wherever Bizet's
"Carmen" is given Coe Glade

sively this season. Her charac
terization ot Bizet's gypsy is a
woman beautifully human and
touchingly brave, even though,
without doubt, ahamolessly ele

Glade believes Carmen should
be queenly in carriage although
she is frivolous in character-
one to whom factory life meant
as little as the love of men, yet
with all her taunts, gibes, se

manner. She thinks that Car

and without shame or misgiving.
