WITH THE FINNISH ARMY
IN TUB MANNERHEIM LINE,
Deo. II (via Vllpuil) For the
third auccesslvo day the red army
hammered at the middle defense
system In the middle of the Kare
lian Isthmus in a critical "battle
ot the Mannerheim line."
Finns everywhere tlung them
back with heavy losses and tenaci
ously retained their positions.
In tour days ot this battle, the
Finns have destroyed or raptured
more than 100 Russian tanks.
Like yratrrday when more
than aM Kuaalau planes flew
over the Finn territory, the day
dawned sunny and tho air over
head throbbed constantly with
nirplima motor aa many aerial
battles occurred.
The number shot down today
haa not been compiled officially
yet.
I spent today at the front on
the vital fighting sector between
lake Muola and lake Kauk where
the bitterest phase ot the battle
proceeded for three days.
I've just come from there. When
I left after dark heavy artillery
fighting waa still going on. Dur
ing the day our group ot corres
pondents had to dive Into the
woods for cover four times because
ot soviet planes overhead,
Thla afternoon I witnessed the
most spectacular dog-tight I've
seen In any way a fantastic fight.
It, lasted tor half an hour.
Hlx Finnish planes engaged It'
soviet planes, most ot them
bomber. l.lko a Hollywood
film battle it started In wild
melon with IT planes diving,
,tnoiiiliu(, sldrallpplnn and splut
tering machine gun bullets.
Witnessing this battle convinced
ma that the Finna have some ex
traordinary fast pursuit planes
with akllirul, courageous pilots.
Several times I saw Finnish
planes pursue even gain, on the
soviet planes, even loom up under
a Riisslun pluno a few tlmea, gain
ing on It tvhllq climbing,
Within halt an hour after the
battle, another air alarm sounded
and 11 soviet bombers came over.
Hhortly afterward nine more
bomber npiienrt'd In groupa ot
three, coming from over the
Finnish front at porlmpa M.tKKl
feet. They were about three
miles front ns. Antiaircraft
guns oKncd fire on them.
Earlier on the way to the (ronl
we were forced to diva Into the
woods and heard hundreds ot ex
plosions tor a tew minutes in the
direction ot Kolrlsto Island, but
whether It was bombs or coaatal
batteries, or both, ws dont know
yet.
Much of the time I waa unable
to distinguish one plane from an
other. In sero cold, the exhausts
of the planes left comet-like
streamera, smoke lying behind
them sometimes for as long aa 10
and IS miles.
