The Modoc Boy Scout council

the Hat throughout the country on

Robert Hayes, deputy regional
cout executive, announced Wed
nesday after a three-day inspec
tion of local scout affairs. In com
pany with Dwight OHchrist, Modoc
executive.
"OHchrist Is to be congrat
ulated," Hayes said. "I can't say
that the Modoc council Is first in
the country because our figures
are not that specific, but this coun
; ell Is rated equal to the best in
respect to new troops formed."
Hayes also said that Modoc
council rates 95 on the basis of
new scout enrollments.
Gilchrist accompanied Hayes as
far as Pinehurst on the Green
springe highway Wednesday,
where a luncheon meeting was
held with Scout Executive Irving
Beasley of the Crater Lake coun
cil at Medford. Gilchrist and
Beasley are members of a regional
committee on Bora Life, monthly
magazine published by the Boy
Scouts of America.
Gilchrist reported he stopped in
Keno on the return trip and found
considerable Interest in forming
a troop there.

Union Pacific railroad head
quarters annouueed today re
sumption of work at Portland.
Ore., Grand Island, Neb., and
Omaha on the system's 19,000,000
car building urogram, temporarily
suspended 30 days ago.
At Portland 125 employes went
back to work Monday, at Omaha
169 mechanics resumed work and
at Grand Island 115 were called
back.
President William M. .letters
said "recessions don't last for
ever; while our revenues have
shown a drastic decline during
the past 90 days, and the outlook
for the near future is not favor
able, we have decided to disregard
the immediate situation and to
continue our program In anticipa
tion of future improvement In
business conditions.
The present building program,
started in October, 1937, calls for
construction of 2600 cars at Oma
ha, Portland and Grand Island. Of
this number, 1700 cars remain to
he built.

Bob Bryant, conductor tor the
Great Northern, left Tuesday for
Oakland where he. will remain for
several weeks as the guest of E. E.
Erwln. Bryant recently submit
ted to a major operation at the
Veterans hospital In Portland.

gan of Spokane passed through
Klamath Falls Wednesday night
