ARMY GENERAL
DEFENDS LINCOLN'S
INTERFERENCE
(Continued from Pag One)
Palmer waa the shouldering upon
General McClellan early in the
war the double responsibility, In
evitably leading to failure, of
commanding both tha general
headquarters and the army of the
Potomac.
Lincoln should have Inter
fered In that situation at once,
the speaker contended.
Wbila General Lee kept up a
series of southern victories, Lin
coln finally used the trial and
error method of seeking capable
commander until Grant waa
given tba supreme command,
Palmer Bald, adding that Grant
had bad the opportunity to de
velop leadership In the Mississ
ippi valley campaign.
Quick Victory
If the government had fol
lowed a recommendation by Gen
eral Washington and been ready
Immediately to mobilize the
militia, tbe civil war would have
been quickly ended with a north
ern victory. Gen. Palmer said.
But If that had been the case
be commented, Lincoln would
not have had opportunity to re
veal nia supreme genius as a
war statesman."
