THE NEWS AND THE HERALD. KLAMATH FALLS. OREGON
JAPAN'S WAR CHARIOT RIDES HIGH although Its roadway Is rickety as this tank rumbles over a partially
ruined bridge somewhere on the Sinonlapanese war front. This remarkable picture was taken as Nipponese troops moved forward
on a new front with mechanical units leading the way. At Nanking, former capital of nationalist China, foreign military experts had
advised Chinese crack forces to retreat before their approaching foes lfottled up the defenders. Large stale troop movement across the
Yangtze is next to impossible because .here are no bridges.
A MODERN STOREHOUSE FOR ANCIENT KNOWLEDGE Is Vienna's
proposed ultra-modern library, designed to replace overtaxed facilities of its present national library
and University of Vienna library. Here is an artist's conception of the structure planned by Dr. Wee

Mellowing Gene Tunney Picks
Schmeling to Plaster Bomber
NEW YORK, Dec. 8 (Al')
After yesterday at Madame Bey's
training emporium, there can be
no further doubt that Gene 'run
ner is expanding and mellowing
in the ripeness of his 39 years.
No one Out at Madame Bey's
retreat in New Jersey would be
hove it when word arrived that
the former champion was going
to watch Max Schmeling work
out. Nino years had passed
since he had hung up the gloves,
and in that time he never had
done more than bow stiffly to
the business that made him his
fortune.
But he showed up on time,
bustled genially into the heart
of the campMadame Bey's din
ing roomand for two hours
appeared to enjoy himself like a
kid out of school.
He sat and sipped wine and
swapped loud talk with a score
of sports writers and roundly
detlored the local movement to
boycott Schmeling's bout with
Harry Thomas Monday night at
Madison Square Garden because
he is a nazi.
Some of those who had tried
long but unsuccessfully to get
acquainted with .Turiney back in
the days when he was champion
of the world sat aside and list
ened in silent amazement. "I
can't believe it's the same man,"
said one.
It was tho first time he had
been hack to Summit since be
fore his first fight with Dempsey
at Philadelphia. Madame Bey
said that having "her two big
boys," Tunney and Schmeling,
back boom at once vita the big
gest event in her life since the
(lay she saw President William
McKinley mortally wounded,
The little gymnasium was
packed with townsfolk when
Gene climbed the hill to watch
Schmeling toil. They gave him
a thumping welcome. He watched
the German keenly and didn't
hesitate or split an infinitive in
picking him to knock out Joe
Louis cold again next June.
"Ile has the greatest right
hand I over saw. He could whip
