Dec. 1 071A house tax subcommittee agreed tentatively today to simplify the system of estate and gift taxes and to lower exemptions. For the present complex ar rangement It decided to substitute an arrangement of "true" or ef fective rates, Chairman Vinson (D-By.) said. The that 240,000 of an estate would be exempt from taxation, Vinson said. Therefore, the rates would range from sem on a 240.- 000 estate to 87.3 per cent on es tates of 2100,000,000 and up. On estimates up to 21,000,000 which make up the bulk of all estatesthe rates would run like this: 0.4 per cent on a 250,000 estate. 1.7 on 270.000. 4.2 on 1100,000, 9.9 on 2200,000. 14.7 on 2400,000, 17.2 on 2600,000, 19.2 on 2800,000 and 21.1 on 21,- 000,000. Vinson said the revenue yields would be the same as under the present estate levies. These start at 2 per cent on the first 210,000 of a taxable estate the portion over 240,000with higher rates graduating up to 70 per cent on the part of a taxable estate in excess of 250,000,000. Gift tax rates now are three fourths of the estate rates and would not be changed under the new plan, Vinson said. "We feel the new plan will be quite helpful to the taxpayer and On giving a true picture to the public of what the real rate is," Vinson userted. The chairman said a present 240,000 exemption for money in vested in insurance would not be changed. But a 240,000 exemp tion from the estate tax and a like exemption from the gift levy would be consolidated, be said. Furthermore, he added. the 15000 per year per person exemp tion from the gift tax will be re duced to 13000. "When 240.000 is reached in respect to either the gift, or es tate tax, or both," he amplified, "there will be no other exemp tion. "Thus, if a person in hie life time used up 120.000 of his gift tax exemption, that amount would be deducted from his 240,000 es tate tax exemption. If he used up all his gift tax exemption, he would have no estate tax exemption." EAGLES OPENING SET DECEMBER 11 At a meeting of the executive board and the house committee of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, it was decided to hold the opening dance at the new ball, Saturday. December 11. Finishing touches on the dance floor are now being made, and a great deal of time and money has been spent to make this floor one of the finest in.the state. Mod rn lighting fixtures have been in stalled and are so arranged that original lighting effects may be serried out. Special musical numbers and features are to be provided for the purpose of making the open ing dance a gala event. Other organizations which are planning to attend are requested to com municate with Jack Benner. Tickets sold for the opening dance originally planned Novem ber 11 and later postponed, will be honored December 11. The public is cordially invited to attend. NEW CITY WINS JIIIIYVEIIDICT A circuit court jury early Wed nesday returned a 9 to 3 verdict for the New City laundry in the suit brought against it by M. R. Hauport. Haupert sued for $1600 alleged )y due under an employment con tract. He claimed the company breached the contract by discharg ing him. The company claimed be breached the contract by walk ing off the job. The jury was out for several hours. It is understood it was deadlocked, 6 to 6, for some time. Finally the jury came in for fur ther instructIons, and at 1230 a.. m. Wednesday brought in its 'Verdict. The laundry was represented by D. E. Van Vector. EPISCOPAL CHURCH PLANS ANNUAL CHRISTMAS SALE The annual Christmas sale and bridge tea to be given by the wo men of St. Paul's Episcopal church will be held Saturday, December 4, at the parish hall, Eighth and Jefferson strolls.
