Stock Market
Quo- tations
NEW YORK, Nov. 22 (
Further depressing business news
side-swiped the stock market to
day and, at the worst, leading is
sues fell one to six points gener
ally and as much as nine or so in
a few cases.
Chilling sentiment was the
tenth consecutive week's drop in
steel mill operations. For the
current week these were placed at
31 per cent of capacity against
around 80 per cent when the
lengthy recession began in Sep
tember. The rate was the small
est since December 2, 1934.
Steels and motors led the morn
ing slide. The latter were affect
ed by the darker sales outlook fqr
new cars in addition to labor
problems. Some benefit, more
ever, was derived from evacuation
of "sit-downers" at General bio
tor plants. Rubbers were not par
ticularly responsive to settlement
of the Goodyear strike.
Some utilities and a handful
of specialties received support in
the last hour and managed to
emerge with modest plus signs.
Dealings were quiet through
most of the day, bdt transfers
were around 1,500,000 shares.
