PAGE SIX MEDICO PLEADS FOR VENEREAL DISEASE FIGHT YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio, Nov. 18 (UP)The time has come to "prove to the world" that under the American ',stem of living ve nereal diseases may be clamped out in the same way as typhoid and diphtheria, Dr. Morris Fish bein said this week in a prepared address delivered over the Na tional Broadcasting system. "Considerable number of Amer ican cities, villages, towns and hamlets have reported an entire year without a single death from diphtheria or from typhoid fe ver," Fishbein, editor of the Jour nal of the American Medical As sociation, said. "We now p the knowl edge necessary to secure results that will permit a similar claim In relationship to the venereal dis eases." Johnson to go On the air with a broadcast which was to discuss social diseases. Broadcasting company officials said they feared Johnson's lan guage would be a "little blunt." They said Fishbein's address was the "frankest" discussion of so cial diseases ever allowed over the air. "Again and again the people have been told about the havoc that is wrought by the venereal disease." Fishbein said. "All ot us ought to know that there is not just one; there are several diseases affecting the organs and tissues of men and women con cerned in childbirth or in Intl mate personal relations. Most of these diseases are spread by hu man contact. "Occasionally. these infections are acquired innocently. "Vast majority of cases of in fection with the venereal diseases represent intimate contacts. Oc casionally infections acquired out side the marriage tie are traus mitted in the ordinary course of life by the father to the mother, or by the mother to the father, or by the mother to the child: by those entrusted with the protec tion of these loved ones to the very people whom they would most desire to protect." Fishbein told of experimental work which has been done in venereal diseases; of the discovery of organisms causing syphilis and gonorrhea; of the Wasserman test, and of the introduction of salvarsan or "606" in treatment. "The use of these discoveries and the campaign against these diseases have languished primar ily because many people do not know the nature of the diseases," he said. "People do not realize they are curable. "T od a y scientific medicine. combining its efforts with those of public health Officials, is be ginning an organized, sustained campaign against the venereal diseases, a campaign in which the public is participating on a tre mendous scale." MEARESS LUNCH OEM UP HOME NEW YORK, Nov. 18 (UP) Mrs. Charles A. Stiff testified in supreme court today that as soon as she quit putting liverwurst in her husband's lunch box she got In hot waterhot water that he poured out of a tea kettle down her back. "And what's more," she added. leaning forward in the witness chair, "he was all time hiding behind doors and making passes at me with his fists." Thus paased another dramatic day in this cause celebre the $250,000 alienation of affections suit which Stiff. baggage master for the New York Central rail road. brought egoista Oscar Doug las, Jr. Stiff contends he had suspected for some time that some one was stealing his wifea affec tions, but became sure of it only when she failed to put his favorite meatliverwurstinto his lunch box. Instead, all be found in the box was a cold potato and some times egg salad. Today Mrs. Stiff, referring to her husband as "a big bully who kept a hard hammer under his pillow and was all time threaten ing my life," told her side of the story. Stiff, wearing his baggage master's uniform. glared at her. Things got so bad after she be gan omitting the liverwurst, Mrs. Stiff said, that she began keeping a "calendar diary" so she could remember all the things Mr. Stiff did to her. The diary was a big red calendar on which she would jot down items on the appropriate day. One item told how he gave her 20 cents and told her to go on a big shopping tour. "He would come downstairs in the morning," she said, "and take his lunch box and throw it out in the alley. The kitchen would be a mess after he got through coffee grounds all over the floor and dishes thrown around some thing terrible. "One day he threw me down a flight of stairs-13 whole steps and I landed on my face. He ran out into the kitchen and got the tea kettle and came back and started pouring scalding water down my back." Tomorrow the jury will decide whether Mr. Stilt'. missing liver wurst is worth 1380,000. SE IMPROVES ON SHAKESPEARE PLAY - LONDON, Nov.
