Government Enters Fight Against Drug WASHINGTON., Oct. 20 (UP) W. G. Campbell, chief of the fed eral food and drug administra tion, last night ordered federal agents to seize all quantities of an elixir of sulfanilamide which is believed to have caused the deatha of nine persons at Tulsa. Okla., and five at East St. Louis, Canadian officials were advised to to take similar steps. Campbell said the action would be taken on the technical grounds of "misbranding" because there is no other provision under the food and drug laws which applies. Solvent Blamed Campbell said that while labor atory tests to date did not ex plain fully just why the victims died, it was believed the solvent in which the sulfanilamide was dissolved was responsible. Campbell said the fatalities re emphasized the need for "ade Ciliate and compulsory" food and drug regulation. The Roosevelt administration has requested that present legislation be revised to meet new problems but congress has not acted. The food and drug chief said "dinitrophenol" was placed on the market "recklessly" some years ago and was still causing deathe because the government was pow erless to proceed agalant those who made and sold it. -- CHICAGO. Oct. 20 (UP) Known deaths from a "proprie tory elixir" of sulfanilamide mounted to IS Tuesday. according to Dr. Morris Fishbein of the American Medical association, who repeated his caution against indiscriminate use of the new drug. He said one more death had been reported at Tulsa. Okla., where eight previously had -been reported. and that four had died at East St. Louis, Ill.. also from the alleged use of the drug. One other was reported near death in East St. Louis, Fishbein said. All of the East St. Louis patients were negroes. Fishbein said one other patient in.Tulsa and another in Heat St. Louis were ill from the effects of diethyline glycol with which the sulfanilamide was mixed. He said he believed the deaths were not caused by sulfanilamide. which. by itself. has given prom ise of controlling a long list of serious ailments. notably those resulting from streptococcus in DEVIL'S ISLAND FUGITIVES PAUSE AT VIRGIN ISLANDS iT.
